UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
ORRIN E. LORD, OF READSBOROUGH, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO TITUS STOWE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING COTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,939, dated July 27, 1875; application filed June 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN E. LORD, of Readsborough, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in folding cots; and it consists in connecting the legs with the bolsters or head-boards in such a manner that they maybe folded together under the slats when not in use, and drawn from thereunder if wanted, and, when set up, form a bolster on either end of the cot, as will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention, in which- Figure l is an inverted view of the cot folded together. Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations of the cot ready for use.
a represents the side rails of a cot, and b cross-bars upon which the slats rest. To these cross-bars, near the side rails, the upper ends of the legs a are pivoted. To the inside of the legs, at a suitable distance from their lower ends, are secured by rods the braces d, in which braces, at their other extremity, deep notches are out. To the outside of the braces, near the notches, are attached by dowels the sides g of the bolster or headboard, which sides are also provided with notches, placed at such a distance from the ends as to be on a line with the notches on the braces.
At the extreme ends of the side rails a are rods h, connecting the rails, and if the bolsters or head-boards are drawn through the opening between the ends of the slats and the rods h, the notches in the braces will clasp the rods from the under side, while those in the sides of the head-boards clasp them from the top. Thus the legs are securely braced and the bolsters or headboards held in their notches, and also braced by the rods h. If the foot-board is not wanted, the braces d alone may be used to steady the legs, and the foot-board be allowed to hang loose.
To fold the cot, draw the head-board from its position and pass both head-board and braces through the opening at the ends of the slats, and extend them their full length under the slats.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a folding cot, the combination of the side rails a, cross-bars 1), legs 0, braces d, headboards g, and rods insubstantially as described.
2. In a folding bed or cot, the combination of the braces d and boards g, the two parts being connected together so as to form braces alone, or braces and head or foot boards, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of May, 1875.
ASAHEL GORE, FRANK H. RIPLEY.
