Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom git magi concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM W. VIN- cnn'r and Don Cannes TRAVIS,-CltiZ8nS of the United States, each residing in the city of Kenosha, county of Ke'ncsha, and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Couch Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improveliients in folding couch attachments, and refers more particularly to a device in connection with the so-called combined davenport and bed.
The salient object of the invention is to provide a simple and reliable pillow support or head rest which is to be attached 0 the outer end of the mattress frame whic 1 projectsbeyond the main body of the ,couch when the device is in position for {use as a bed. o
'Other objects of the invention are to provide a construction of the character i ellerred to which folds down out ofthe way when the mattress frame is in its folded or closed position and which also assists in confining the mattress or bedding; to provide a'construction of the character referred to which automatically locked in either its extended or folded position; t5 provide a construction which can be readily soured to any well known type of folding couch or bed; and in general to provide an improved construc tion of the characterreferred to. L;
The invention consists in the matters here inafter described and more particulaiily pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings F view of a folding couch equipped with our invention and showin the mattress or bed frame in extended position/part of the mattress being broken awa Fig. 2 is fragxnentary side elevation on an enlarged scale,
the folded position of the attachment being shown in dotted 'lincs5'Fig. 3 is afragn1entary end elevation of the view shown in Fig. 2. 1
In devices of this character when the couch is in its extended position for use as a bed, the pillow at the inner side of the bed rests against the arms of the couch or daven= port, but in prior constructions there has been nothin against which the pillow at the outer site of the bed might rest or be supported The present invention servcsas igure 1 1S a perspective a head rest at the outer side of the bed and provided with one of these attachments.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing 1 designates as a whole a folding couch or davenport comprising a back 2, sides or arms 3, and a bottom 4. A stufied seat or cushion 5 is secured within theframe of the couch and rests upon and incloses the extensible, bed frame when the latter is in its folded position. In the drawings the device is shown in its extended position for use as a bed, in which case the cushion memher 5 is swung up against the back of the Fatented may 1%; 1914.
couch. Within the couch is secured a folding bed frame 6 comprisingsections 6 and 6 pivoted to each other as shown at 7' whereby the sect-ion 6 can fold back upon the other section 6. Then in its extended position the outer end of the bed frame is supported by legs 7 pivoted to the frame as shown at 8. The upper ends of the legs 7 are pivotally connected to brace members 9. A metallic fabric 10 is stretched across the bed frame and supports the mattress or bedding 11 as shown.
' The foregoing parts are not described more in detail for the reason that they formno part of the present invention.
Describing now more particularly the let-j tachment in quest-ion, at either end 'of'the folding frame 6 are" riveted or otherwisesecured a pair of sup orting posts 12 and xgich preferably to re the form of angle i he. One flange. 14 of each angle iron is riveted as'shown at 15 to the bed frame while, the other flange 16 serves :18 a pivotal su port for the head rest or pillow support The latter comprises side members 18-and top 19, preferably made in asingle piece and cross rods 20 and- 21. The lower ends of the side members 1am bent inwardly as shown at '22 and pivotally engage the flange 16 of the posts. The attachment is automatically locked in either its extended or folded position by means of a coil contractile spring 23 one end of which is hooked into a loop 24 which preferably is formed by bending the adjacent end of the cross rods 21. The lower end of the. spring is secured as shown at 25 to the adjacent end of ice the bed frame. Each of the attachments. is
provided with one of these springs and it. is
to be particularly noted that the lower ends of the springs are secured to the bed frame l a Wire head rest having at its lower end latat points offset from the point of attachment of the head rest to the post. The ar rangcment is such that the springs 28 will automatically snap the attachments into open position and there lock them as the latter are open. The springs act in a similar manner when the head rests are swung inwardly.
The invention is not limited to the details of construction shown except as set forth in the appended claim.
lVe claim as our invention:
The combination with a folding couch frame, of posts of angle cross-section extending from opposite corners at one end thereof,
eral pintle extensions for engaging in holes formed in the longitudinally extending flanges of the respective posts a short distance below the top of the posts whereby said rest may be swung into horizontal position against a mattress on the'frame or to a Vertical position to form a resting abutment for the head, and a spring connecting between said rest and said frame to yieldingly lock said rest in either position.
