Section for Beds, of which the following is a full and complete specification.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an improved folding end-section or head-rest especially adapted for application to metal cots or to folding bed-frames such as is used in connection with the conventional type of sofa-bed or davenport in which the bed sections are foldable upon each other so as to be confined in a box or receptacle therefor beneath the seat of the sofa or davenport; whereby in the present instance the end-section or head-rest may be folded down upon the mattress so as not to interfere with the folding of the bed sections and their confinement within the box, and also serve to assist in holding the mat tress firmly against the metal bed-frame sections during the operation of folding and unfolding the bed.
lily invention consists in providing a light,
and durable folding end-section or headrest comprising a frame hingedly connected at its ends to the metal bed-frame section so as to swing or fold thereon, in connection with a spring for maintaining said endseetion or head-rest in either its folded or extended position.
My invention further consists in the par- "icuiar construction of the frame constituting the folding end-section or head-rest, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
in the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an end view showing the application of my invention to a metal bed-frame section, the end-section or head-rest being in extended position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view throughthe center of the parts shown in lrig. l the end'section 0r head-rest being shown in folded position. I
My invention may be applied to thebcdframe section 'or sections of any type of folding-bed, cot, couch, &c., although in the present instance it is shown as applied to a metal bed-frame section of a folding-bed in which the end pieces are each made of an angle-bar, 5, connected by a tubular bar or rail 6, the fabric or spring liedbottom A, being connected to said end pieces in the usual manner.
In cam'ying; out my invention the end piecebr angle-bar 5 is provided near its ends withshort uprights or standards 7, 7, rigidlyjsecured thereto in any suitable mannor, in the present instance by a single rivet 8, inasmuch as the squa red lowerend oi the standard is seated on the bottom flange of theangle bar and the attaching-rivet passes throufgh thevertical member thereof. Each upriglitX orstandard 7 is preferably in the form of an angle-plate, one member, as 7, of which rests against the vertical member of the end-piece or angle-bar of the bedframe, and the other member, as 7, pro jects inwardly at a right-angle therefrom, for the particular purpose hereinafter explained- The end-section or head-rest, 9, is hinged or pivoted at its ends to the inwardly-projecting member 7 of the angle-plates or standards below the upper ends thereof and a slight distance in advance of the member 7, whereby when said end-section is raised the outward movement thereoi'wiil be-limited to a position slightly beyond the vertical, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig.2. The end-section is formed of wi re, of proper gage, and consists of a loop or inverted U-shape frame 9 having terminal eyes 9*, 9
and an inner frame or brace 10 also formed of wire and of a suitable design, connected to said U'shape frame. The wire forming the brace 10 is in the present instance bent upon itself to form a center t -shape exterc sion or loop 10, and end members 10 projecting at an acute angle from the sides of the said V-shape extension or loop, the terminals 10 of the end members being bent abruptly and laterally to pass through and beyond the eyes 9* of the U-shape frame and through corresponding openings formed in the members 7* of the standards 7, Where by to nbt only connect these parts but also provide pivots or gudgeons by which the end-section or head-rest is pivoted or hinged to the uprights. The frame 9 and brace 10 are further connected together, at intermediate points, by clips 11, which embrace the wire of the frame and wire of the brace, engaging the latter at the bends between the V-shape center and erul-n'1cn1bers, the Wire of the frame at these points being depressed, as shown at 9, to receive the clips, so that in conjunction with the adjoining bends of the wire brace the parts of the end-section or head-rest are thereby rigidly connected. In this manner, as Will be observed, the endsection or head-rest is hinged or pivoted to the standards (preferably being sprung into position) so that it may fold down upon the bed-frame section or mattress thereon, and when swung upwardly it will rest against the upper ends of said standards at a slight rearward inclination. It will be also observed that the end-section or head-rest is of light, strong, and durable construction, and by connecting the two parts thereof in the particular manner herein shown and described the ends of the Wire-brace form the means of pivotal connection to the short uprights or standard on the metal bed-frame section; such means in the present instance providing for readily and conveniently applying the end-section or head-rest, inasmuch as the ends of the wire-brace are movable in the eyes of the frame but are held normally projected by the spring tendency of the Wire of which the end members of said brace are formed. To maintain this end-section or head-rest in either its folded or extended. position a helical spring 12 is connected at one end to the V-shape center of the brace and at its other end to the up per part of the anglebaror end piece of the bed-frame section on a line beyond the standards, so that the tension of the spring will exert a holding strain when said end section or headrest is swung past the vertical in either direction.
The device may be applied to any form of bed, cot, couch, &c., but as heretofore stated is especially adapted for application to that type of folding metal bed-frame sec-- tions employed in connection with sofabeds or bed-davenports, to provide folding ends therefor.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim.

E2. in combination, with a bed-frame, having transversely omiosite hearings, an endsection or head-rest comprising a substantially Ushaped outer frame having eyes at its ends, and an inner angular wire brace connected intermediate its ends to the frame and having end-members with short lateral terminals passing through and beyond the aforesaid eyes and into the opposite bearings of the bed-frame.
3. In combination, with a. bed-frame, having transversely opposite bearing-openings, an end-section or head-rest, comprising an outer wire frame of substantially U-shape having terminal eyes corresponding to the aforesaid bearing-openings, and an inner wire brace having a central portion of substantially V-shape and at each side of the same inclined terminals laterally bent to form bearings, said bearings passing through the eyes of the outer frame and through and beyond the same into the bear- 1ng-openings of the bed-frame, and clips connecting the outer frame and the brace at each side of the central V-shaped portion of the latter.
4. In combination, with a bed-frame, angular endstandwrds rising therefrom and provided with bearing-opcnings, an endsection or head-rest comprising an outer wire "frame of substantially U-shape having terminal eyes corresponding to the aforesaid bcaring-openings in the standards, an inner wire brace having a central portion oi. substantially Vshape and at each side of the same inclined terminals laterally bent to form bearings, said bearings passing through the eyes of the outer frame and beyond the same into the bearing-openings of the standards, clips connecting the outer frame and the brace at each side of the central V-shaped portion of the latter, and a coiled spring connected to the V-shaped portion of the brace and to the bed'frame,
whereby to exert tension on the end-section or head-rest when at either side of the pcrpendicular.
5. In combination with a bod-fran1c having]; transversely opposite bearings, an cndsection or lucid-rest comprising: a substantially U-Slm wd outer frame having eyes at its ends, and an lnciosod wirerlu'ace doubled upon itself to form a central extension and having its terminals laterally disposed to orm bearings and passed ilurough and berend the eyes of the .U haped frame and into the hearings of t c bed-frame, connecin msfimony whereof K have signed wire-brace. m, each sidecfi said cenfiaml ax tension of the latter, and an spring mnmctedi two subscribing witnesses. W is said cenfiml extension of the Wire-brace WENDELIN 5 and to the bed-frame, whereby said head Wisfinesses:
rest may be yieldingly held. at each side I FRANK J. SENG, 05 its vertical position. JOHN M. Bnos'r.
