Application filed June 16, 1927. Serial No. 199,244.
My invention relates to a combined brush and mop holder and the object is to provide simple and highly eliicient device of said kind designed particularly for holding a scrubbing brush by means fixed on the lower end of a stick, said means so arranged as to readily release such brush and subsequently be used as a mop holder; as illustrated in theaccompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved device holding a scrubbing brush.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my device in a horizontal plane and shown holding a mop rag.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 5 designates mop handle of suitable length and one end of which is retained as by a screw 8 in a central socket 6 of a transverse metal member 6 comprising preferably two sheet metal platesriveted together as at G the front edge parts of said plates being spread apart to form a forwardly opening channel 6 The extremities of said channels 6 are normally engaged slidably by the parallel arms 7 of a heavy wire yoke 7 having its forward part connecting said arms, arranged parallel to channel 6. Rearward of said channel the yoke comprises two inwardly directed angular arms 7 B terminating in inwardly directed short parts with spaced horizontally registering button heads 7 9 is a collar encircling handle 5 in spaced relation to socket 6 and between said two parts a compression coil spring 10 encircles the handle 5 loosely. 10 are diametrically opposite projecting hingepins on said collar on which are journaled the upper forward parts of an elongated sheet metal cam-shield 11 of U-shape in cross section about as at line a--a in Fig. 2. The rear end of said cam member comprises an integral rearwardly directed finger piece 11 adapted to be pressed close to or against the under side of handle 5 and be detachably retained in a suitable clip or lock 12 fixed on the stick, said clip preferably being of the type shown and as covered by my Patent Number 1,613,- 142, issued January 4, 1927.
13 is a scrub brush of the usual type having a wooden back or top of quadrangular elongated shape. 14 is a similar shaped small block fixed centrally on the brush top and near one long edge thereof.
15 is an irregularly shaped slot, one in each side wall of cam 11 and both said slots registering horizontally, the headed parts 7 of yoke 7 being slidable therein. When the scrub brush is in use, (Fig. 1), the channel 6 of the member 6 isengaged with therear and upper edge of block 14. The front bar of yoke 7 is slid forwardly, riding in slots 7, until it is just forward of the front edge of block 14, the cam 11 being freed from holder 12 and allowed to hang from pivots 18. Then cam 11 is swung rearward and upward toward the stick 5 and engaged in member 12, the front termini of slots 15 drawing the heads 7 of yoke 7 rearwardly and causing the yoketo be securely clamped against the front edge of block 1 1. Spring 10 may yield some during this operation,
but when linger 11 is locked, it presses the entire cam rearwardly and maintains the clamping actionon yoke 7, as long as the device is used for scrubbing purposes. It is clear that the stick 5 extends upwardly at an angle and enables an operator to scrub a floor without stooping.
7 In this position it will be further understood that the slots 15 resemble a l mark in shape. To release the brush 13 the operator simply releases finger piece 11 swings cam 11 downwardly and forward and thus the heads 7 are freed from pulling strain by the lower termini of said slots 15 and the block 1 1 is no longer frictionally engaged. In using my device as a mop holder, the front bar of yoke 7 is brought up close to channel 6 a mop rag 16 first being placed on said bar. The rear parts of yoke 7 are simply slid along the slots 15 into the upper termini 15 of the latter, while cam 11 is free and swung forward. Said termini 15 are so located that when the cam 11 is swung into locked position (Fig. 2), the yoke arms 7 and heads 7 are forced upward and rearward of pivots .18 causing the front bar of yoke 7 to be pressed in parallel relation with and toward channel 6 and squeezing the mop 16 therebctween securely. Any necessary yielding of the cam is provided for in the action of spring 10 under compression between the collar 9 and the socket (i It will now be more readily understood that the opposite ends of the slots 15 are merely so spaced with relation to the pivot 18 and the channel 6 that the yoke when engaged in the front ends or rear ends of said slot will draw the yoke into respective brush holding and mop olding positions.
I claim: 7
1. A mop and brush holder of the class described, comprising a handle, a metal member with a socket on one end of said handle and having a forwardly directed transverse channel in said metal member;
said channel being adapted to engage the adjoining top and rear edge parts of a brush back; a collar slidahle out said handle and rearward of said channel member, pivotarms on said collar and a U-shaped cam member pivotally suspended from said arms, and each leg thereof having corresponding slots and a retaining notch whereby the spacebetween the cross bar and channel member may be varied, a yoke member with parallel arms guided in opposite ends of said channel and a cross bar uniting said parallel arms forward of: the channel; rearwardly and inwardly directed arms on said yoke, projecting into said slots to press said bar of the yoke and said channel parts torear arms of the yoke slidably engaging one in each said slot, one terminus of each said slots located rearwardly of the cam fulcrum and the other terminus forward of said fulcrum, the first mentioned termini of the slot adapted lobe engaged by the end parts of said yoke arms to draw the front bar of the latter close to the said channel. to retain a mop between said parts; and a longitudinally yielding element to press the cam rearwardly and yieldingly.
3. The structure specified in claim 1 in which said cam comprises an elongated sheet metal shell, with a finger piece extending rearwardly from the lower partof said shall, each of the side walls of the cam shell provided with an irregularly curved slot registering horizontally with each other and said rear arms of the yoke slidably engaging one in each said slot, one terminus of each said slots located rearvardly of the cam fulcrum and the other terminus forward of said fulcrum, the first mentioned termini of the slot adapted to be engaged the end parts of said yoke arms to draw the front bar of the latter close to the said channel to retain a mop between said parts; and a longitudinally yielding element to press the cam rearwardly and yieldingly, said yielding element comprising a compression coil spring about the mop handle andbetween said fulcrum collar and the socket member in which the front end of the mop handle is retained.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
BENJAMIN o. CLEMENT.
