UNITED STATES PATENT orrice.
SAMUEL ELLIOTT, OF GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO SHUB.KLAMP MOP HOLDER CORP., OF GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA, A CORPORATION OF NORTH CAROLINA. 1
MOP CLAMP.
Application filed February 16, 1925- Serial N 0. 9,666.
This invention relates to mop clamps or holders, particularly adapted for holding mop heads, mops, rags, waste and other material used for mopping floors, drying floors,
6 washing windows, automobiles and generally used in cleaning and scrubbing.
One of the primary objects of the invention is to provide a clamp which may be attached to the handle without the necessity of the handle being threaded, reduced or otherwise weakened, and also avoiding the cost of producing such threads or reducements.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp that will permit mops of different size to be readily grasped and securely held Without slipping, and also hold the mop in such a way that it may be readily detached when it becomes matted or is to be replaced by a new one. In thatconnection, it is proposed to provide a novel clamping lever that performs the dual function of manipulating a movable clamping jaw and also places the same under compression F thereby to hold the clamping jaw'in engagement with the mop.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the sameconsists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed. 7
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved mop clamp. v
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the combined rigid jaw and attaching sleeve unit.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line H of Figure 1.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the manufacture of mop clamps for the market it is necessary not only to consider the item of manufacturing cost but to also consider convenience of manipulation as well as proper provision for preventing accidental disengagement of the mop from the mop clamp. Also, the clamp must be vided with teeth 3 and the sleeve 2 being I formed to telescopically receive the full diameter of the handle H. This combined jaw and attaching sleeve unit may be formed from a single stamping of metal, and the jaw formed as shown, while the tubular sleeve portion 2-is preferably closed at its front end to strengthen or brace the sleeve while the rear end is provided with the perforated ears 4:. With the construction described, it will be apparent that the attaching sleeve may be readily fitted overthe end of the handle H and may be secured thereto by means of the fastening 5 which passes through the openings 6--6 in the sides of the sleeve. The said fastening 5 may be a bolt, rivet or the like, and also serves as the pivot axis of the jaw manipulating lever designated generally as L.
The fixed jaw 1 previously referred to cooperates with amovable jaw 7 which comprises a substantially T-shaped body portion having a mop clamping head 8 provided with teeth 8 and the end of the shank portion of the'body being formed with the down-turned perforated ears 9 for registering with the perforated ears 4 thereby to receive a combined jaw pivot and lever anchoring pin 10. The movable clampin jaw 7 ispreferably made of spring meta and the intermediate portion thereof is provided with laterally projecting lugs 1111 adapted to ride in the slots 12 in the arms 18 of the manipulating lever L.
Referring further to the manipulating or compression lever L it will be observed from Figures 1 and 41 that arms 13 merge into the body portion 1 1 which is looped as indicated at 15, thereby to receive a substantially U-shaped bail 16 having the hooked ends 17 for engaging over the projecting ends of the anchoring pin 10.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the several parts of the mop clamp may be readily stamped from sheet hooked portions 17 of the holder bail 16.
When it is desired to place amop between the jaws land 8, the same may be separated as indicated in dotted lines to permit of the insertion of the mop. The compression lever L may then be operated to cause the edges of theslots 12 to pull down on the lugs 11, thereby closing the jaws against the mop and placing the upper clamping jaw under tension, the lugs 11 riding along the slots as the end of the lever is compressed to the point where the hooked ends 17 of the bail 16 will engage over the anchor projections of the pin10. When it is desired to release the mop from the jaws of the clamp the lever L is compressed, sufficiently to permit the hooked ends 17 to disengage the pin 10 and then the lever L may be manipulated thereby to release the clamping jaw 7 Y and also assist in forcing it away to facilitate. the removal of the mop. s
' Without further descriptionit is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilledin the art, and itwill of course be understood that changes inthe form, proportion and minor details of construction maybe resorted to withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims. 1 l
I claim:
1. A mop clamp comprising a combined fixed jaw and tubular handle attaching sleeve, a movable clamping jaw of resilient metal pivotally connected to the rear end of the attaching sleeve, laterally projecting lugs on the movable clamping jaw, a lever on said sleeve having slottedarms for receivingthe said lugs, and means carried by theend of said lever for holding the same toward the attaching sleeve thereby to place the clamp ing jaw under tension.
2. A mop clamp comprising a combined fixed jaw and a tubular handle attaching sleeve,a movable clamping jaw havinglaterally projecting" lugs, a combined pivot and anchoring pin for connecting the-movable clamping jaw and the attaching sleeve, a lever pivoted to the sleeve and having slotted arms for receiving the lugsof the clamping jaw, and a bail carried by the lever and provided with hooks adapted to engage with the said pivot and anchoring pin. I
3. A mop clamp comprising a fixedjaw carried bya tubular sleeve, a handle for the tubular sleeve, a movable resilient jaw pivotally connected to the sleeve, a lever pivotally 7 connected to the sleeve and adapted'to engage with the intermediate portion of the resilient'jaw, and a fastening member connected with the lever for securing the same in operat ve posltion.
4;. A mop clamp comprisinga fixed jaw.
and. tubular handle attaching sleeve, perforated ears formed at the rear end of the attaching sleeve, a movable jaw of resilient material, pivot means for connecting the rear end of said movable jaw with the perforated ears of the atta'chings'leeve, a lever pivotally connected to the attaching sleeve, means on said lever engaging the intermediate portionof the movable jaw and means for anchoring said lever to said pivot means.
In testimony whereofl hereunto aiiix my signature. I
