Patented Jan. 20, 1931 MATTHEW J. WELLING,
v CORPORATION on ILLINoIs r Application i11ed March 10Q 192 7. Serial mime;
This invention relates to a mop handle attachment and has for its object to provide an attachment which may be readily secured to a mop handle and from which the mop handle may bede-tached by pivotal-movement with respect to the attachment. 7 It is a further object of this invention to provide a mop handle attachment adapted to be pivotally connected to a mop handle and provided with means for locking said mop handle during a greater part of its range of pivotal movement. 7
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures'in the specification and the accompanying drawings. I
This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top planview of a device embodying the principles of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line II1III of Figure 1 with parts in elevation.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line IV-IV of Figure 1.
As shown on the drawings The reference numeral 1 indicates a triangular shaped plate formed of sheet metal provided with upwardly turned flanged edges 2. Said plate 1, it will be understood, is adapted more especially to be secured to amop swatch, but may obviously be of any suitable form for use in connection with other devices of similar character, such as The bot- Y tom of said plate 1 is stamped upwardly to provide a raised portion 3.having parallel raised edges 1 and 5. An intermediate groove 6 is formed in said raised portion 3 parallel to V a substantially cylindrical opening 10; Said strap 7 is further provided 'wi than arcuate shaped tongue 11 struck'up-from said strap, the free 'end'of sald'tongue being spaced from said strap for a purpose that will later appear. v
' A member 12 is adapted to be pivotally mounted to said plate 1 and for this purpose is provided with a slot 13through which the strap 7 may be inserted-before being secured to the plate 1. In assembled'position said.
member 12is pivotally mounted upoi'i the' strap 7 with its bottom portion .14- extending through theopening 10 formed by the hollow ridge 9 and grooved Saidportion Islis" adapted to fri'ctionally engage the 'walls'of said opening 10 so thatcwhen the member 12,
is swiveled about theporti'on 14 as anaxis, it will remain many position to which 113 18 moved. I Said mcmber:1 2 is further provided with'a transverseislot 15 adapted tolre'ceive the tongue 11. A ferrule '16, suclr as is common lyused onthe e'ndslof mop handle's is rice OF CHICAGO, I'LLINoIs, Ass'IeNoR fro O-CEDAR 003.1 A
formed with a lower flattened end 17 adapted to receive the member 12. Said fiattenedendpermanently or semi-permanently secured in the socket of the ferrule'lfi. The handle and ferrule may thenbe' attached to the attachment 1 by sliding the flattened end 17 of the ferrule over the member12 while themember 12 is in inclined POSllJlOllyShOWll in dotted lines in Figure 4. Inthis position the member 12 is out'ofengagement with the arcuate shaped'tongue 11, so that the ferrule 16 may be slipped over the member 12 until the slots 15 and 18 coincide. '16 may then be swung into upright position, the tongue 11 passing t'l-irough the coinciding slots. g ment with the'f'errule 16 and member 12 eX- The handle and ferrule, I
Since the toi1gue11 will be in engagecept for a small portion of the pivotal range of sa'id member 12, "there is little danger of the ferrule becoming detach-ed during use of device above described provides quick and made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range W1thout departingfrom the principlesof this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon,1 otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claimas my invention: r 1. A mop handle attachment, comprising a ferrule having a flattened end provided with a transverse slot, a mop plate. a slotted member pivoted to said plate and adapted to j be inserted into the-flattened end of said ferrule and an arcuate tongue secured to said 5. A mop handle attachment, comprising a ferrule having an'apertured end for receivin a handle, a pivotal member slidably connected to said ferrule, a base member arranged to receive a mop, and a strap disposed on said base member for securing said pivotal mem ber thereto, said strap having an arcuate shaped tongue for engaging said ferrule and said pivotal member for locking said ferrule to said pivotal member and normally permitting pivotal movement of both relative to said base member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
, MATTHEW J. WELLING.
plate and adapted to pass through both of said slots to secure said ferrule to said plate. 2. A mop handle attachment, comprising a ferrule for the end of the mop handle, said ferrule being flattened and provided with a transverse slot insaid flattened portion, a plate for attachment tov the mop having an upwardly stamped portion provided with spaced slots along opposite raised edges, and" an intermediate transverse groove, arstrap having prongs secured through the slots 1n said raised edges and having a transverse hollow rib registering with said transverse groove, a slotted member pivotally mounted upon said strap between said rib and groove, said slotted member being adapted to be inserted into the flattened end of said ferrule so that the slots in said ferrule and in said member coincide, and an arcuate shaped tongue struck up from said strap and adapted to eX- tend through the slots in said slotted ferrule and said member for the greater part of the pivotal movement of said member.
3. A mop handle attachment comprising a ferrule having an apertured end, a member to which a mop may be secured, apertured means pivotally mounted on said member and adapted to be inserted into said ferrule with said apertures coinciding, and means secured to said member adapted to extend through said coinciding apertures only during a part of the distance through which said pivotally mounted means may be moved.
l. A mop handle attachment, comprising a ferrule having an apertured end, a member to which a mop maybe secured,-apertu red means I pivotally mounted on said member and adapted to be inserted into said ferrule with said apertures coinciding, and an arcuate tongue struck up from said member adapted to eX-Q.
tend through said coinciding apertures during a part of the distance through which said pivotally mounted means may be moved.
