To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS J. PHILLIPS, of Washington, county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Portable Apparatus for the use of Phonographers, Authors, and others; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved apparatus for the use of phonographers, authors, auctioneers, artistic sketching, and for the use of persons generally who travel or take notes, or who have use for a portable tablet or writing-desk in a neat compact pocket or book form, whereby the ordinary clumsy method is dispensed with; and the invention consists in combining within a case made of any durable material a raised platform or table at the same height as the cover, a hinged cover with an opening immediately above said platform, and a roller working in journals at each end of the case. These rollers are provided with a slot for the purpose of fastening the loose end of the paper, each roller being also provided with a milled thumbpieoe or other equivalent upon its extension outside of the case, for the purpose of revolving or winding around it the paper which has been used or written upon. The corresponding roller has upon it the roll of paper to be unwound or transferred as fast as it is used. Frictional devices may be used to keep the rollers in position. The case is made in two parts hinged together, the lower part containing the rollers and and the upper part forming a hinged cover, which may be opened to take out, adjust, and replace the rollers, or any portion of paper, as it may be desired. This lid has an orifice equal to the top of the platform, table, or tablet, over which the paper is drawn, thus exposing the paper on a flush with the top of the case. The case may be attached to the arm of a chair or other convenient place when desired, or may be held in the hand, as it is always ready for imskilled in the art to the tablet,

mediate use, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the case; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a perspective view, showing the interior of the open case.

A is the case, having the raised platform D within it. This platform is shorter than the case, and is on a plane nearly or quite flush with the top of the case.v B B are two re cesses, one on each side of said platform, whereon the rollers C G work. 0 G are the rollers working in journals or slots (1 d, centrally located or equidistant between top and bottom in the side of case A. Each of these rollers is provided with an extension, having fixed thereon a thumb-piece, G, milled orotherwise, whereby the roller is turned in either direction. Each roller is also provided with a slot running longitudinally its entire length within the case, by which means the end of the paper E is secured thereto.

The space beneath the platform may, be utilized for the purpose of carrying ink, pens, pencils, scissors, or any other necessary article requiredsuch as artists paints, brushes, 850.

F is the top, having an opening corresponding in size to the top of the raised platform, so that the paper to be written upon will be exposed for use.

The operation of the apparatus is as follows: A roll of paper is inserted in the recess B, working in slot (1. The end of the paper is passed over the raised platform D, and fastened in the slot in roller 0. The top or lid is then closed, when it"is ready for use. As the paper is being used or written upon, the thumb-piece is turned, thereby rolling up the written matter as fast as may be required, always allowing the last line to be exposed to view, that the thread of thought may not be lost sight of, thereby avoiding confusion. Thus it will be seen that the written matter is kept neat and clean, and entirely from View, and not at all liable to he lost, while it facilitates the writer by saving time, avoiding the trouble of turning over leaf after leaf. Two or more rollers may be used, one replacing the other, while that with the written matter may be carried ed to the printer or elsewhere in a neat and compact package, in regular order, as it was taken down, thus again facilitating the reader and avoiding the danger of confusion arising so frequently from misplacing the pages or loose sheets of paper.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a sketching 0r phonograpllic apparatus, the case A, formed in two parts, (a body and a lid,) having a raised platform, D, flush with the top or lid of said case, rollers O O, and the aperture in lid of said case, whereby the tablet or paper to be sketched or written upon will be always exposed, substantially as described.
