BOOK HOLDER.

This invention relates to a novel bookholder and has for one of it objects the provision of a device especially adapted to cover telephone books, magazines or the like which is eliectire in its operation, durable, cheap to make and not likely to get out of order.

idlOtllQl object of this invention is to provide a flexible means for engaging between the leaves of the book to be held, which flexible means is locked in place in such a way that it will not accidentally slip from the operative position.

As is customary in devices of this character, the. invention contemplates the use of flexible back 5 which has attixcd thereto a metal 6, which is secured to the back 5 by rivets or analgous means 7. The novel features of this invention lie in the metal and co-acting parts which perform the function of securely holding the book or magazine between covers 5. Metal 6 should have its ends turned upwardly at right, angles to present an arcuate end member 8 between which the book is positioned and which supports a flexible holding cable 9.

There is an up-turned end. member at each end of metal 6 and one of the members 8, has an opening through which cable 9 passes to be engaged by a ball or similar member 10 as shown in Fig. 2. One end of cable 9 is adapted to removably engage the adjacent end member 8, and has means carried there by for coming into actual engagement with the end member 8 to preclude any wearing of the cable 9. The means carried by the free end of cable 9 may be any suitable gripping unit 12 which has a cylindrical protuberance 12 adapted to engage the slot 13 formed in the end member 8. forms a protecting wall around that portion of the cable passing through slot 13, and. an annular flange forms a wall which keeps the cable from pulling the gripping member 12 through slot 13 when back 6 is slightly flexed. A ring 1* should be provided to be used as a means for hanging the book holder after the book has been inserted therein. As shown in Figs. 3 and l, slot 13 is angled slightly and terminates in a portion 13 which extends at right angles to the base of member (5.

After the able is drawn tight and the gripping member 12 is positioned as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with protuberance 12' protecting cable 9, the same may be locked in position through the use of a locking means which is here shown to be lug l4: pivotally mounted as at 15 on the slotted end member 6. When the lug lat is in the unlocked position, it is disposed as shown in Fig. 3 and when it is swung to the closed or locked position it engages a portion of protuberance 11 3 and passes between flange f and the end member 8. ln closing lug. let, its tapered edge 16 wedges into position, and, besides locking the gripping member 12 in place, cable 9 is pulled longitudinally and further tightened. This pulling will slightly tlex or how base metal 6 which will thereafter tend to exert a pressure against cable 9 to hold it taut.

It will thus be seen that when cable 9 has been passed between the leaves of a book, at substantially the center thereof the parts are rigid and will not jar to the loosened condition. Edge 17 may be arched as shown in Figs. 3 and a to further keep gripping member 12 from dropping along slot 13.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:

l. A book holder comprising a semi-rigid back piece having Lip-turned ends, a flexible member joining said ends and means for tightening said member to slightly l'lex said back piece.
