Specification of I a P t ;"atentcdf Mar. 5, 19.1185.
Continuation of application Serial. Noyti'AJfi filed liehruarj 10; 1916. Th'is'application. filed April 19, 1917..
I Serial No. 163,204. r i 1 '1 t) 01/ Ii /2.0m it may] minnow: i
lie it known that I, Human-3 l. Il inois- 'IUN. u ritizcnoi the l uitod Hiatus. residing at I'EflliliiiZV/HH). county oil Kaluinamo. State of Michiggu-in have. invented certain new and useful lin )roi'einents in 'l enlporarv Binders. oi which the toilowing is a specilicution.
This invention. relates to improvements in temporary binders.
The main olijeets oi this invention are:
i i to provide in a temporary binder or loose sheet holdcran in l iroved adjusting n'lechanism.
Fiecoi'ujl. to provide an improved tempo rar hinder or loose sheet holder which is capable oi. rapid manipulation to permit the insertion or removal oi the sheets and one which is adjusted very securely.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural. details, will. definitely appeal. from the detailed descri iition to follow.
I accomplish the objects oi. my in vention by the devices and means described in the tollmving specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A. structure which. is a preferreijl embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming); a part of this specification, in which:
I igul'e I is a detail inside plan view of a binder cinl'iodying the :Features oi. myinvention with the covers extended.
Fig. II is an enlarged ii'iverted detail of the adjusting mechanism shown in Fig. I.
Fig. III an enlarged detail section on a line (:01'1'6813011di11g; to line 3- -3 of Fig. II.
Fig. IV 1'. a view similar to F II. but showing a modified form of the clutch release.
In the drawing similar reference characters Intel." to similar parts throughout the several views. and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends oi. the section lines.
lteierrin to the drawing. the covers 1 and 9 are pretlerahly n'ovided with clamping bars 3 substantially as shown in my Patent No. 1,022,452, April 9, 1919,. Binding memhers t, preteral'ily in the term of IlK-iXlblQ strips, extend between the covers l'ieinp, connected to one cover at 5 and to the other cover through my improwid adjusting mechanism. The cover 2 is provided with a recess 6 in which the adjusting mechanism is (l.lb] )()$0tl. The binding strips .u re connected tea cross bar 7 to which thebar-lihe ad justing member 8 connected at 9. 'liho bar S slides inthe guides IOot the support 11; which is mounted within the recess (3 ot the (:(JWI'. ilhebar: 8 llfiltl lll its adjusted position;by means elf-the. clutch rollcn 1i, whiciris arcing-ed, in ausupport comprising an inclined way 13 disposed at an angle to the inn 8 so that when therollce travels toward the inner end of the cover it is brought into clutching engagement with the bar. A spring lturges the roller toward its clutching position. The roller is disengaged from its clutch position by the lever 15, which is pivoted at 16 and projects into the housing or roller support so that when the lever is actuated. it releases the clutch. The lever project. at the edge of the support 11 so as to be conveniently grasped. A spring 17 mounted on the pin 18 to return the lever to its ii'ioperativc position. The bar 8 is toothed on one side to enact with the pawl 190i the adjusting lever 20. The paw] is urged to its engaging position and the lever returned to its initial. position by the spring 91 mounted on the pin 22. A stop 23 is positioned so as to engage the pawl when the lever in its initial position, lifting the pawl from engagement with the car.
In the modification shown in Fig. IV the clutch roller 12 is released by the lever 24 which is pivoted at 25. The lever 24 has a linger piece 26 which projects inwardly from the inner side of the support 11 so that it may be released by pushing thereon in a direction toward the outer edge of the cover. A spring 27 secured to a pin 28 tends to return the lever 2 1 to its normal position which is determined by a stop pin 29. With the parts thus arranged I secure a structure which is simple an d secure in its adjustment and capable 0i. convenient and rapid manipulation.
This application is a continuation and division in part of my eo-pcnding application, Serial No. 77396, filed February 10, 1916. the embodiment of Figs. I, II and III being shown in that application.
Having; thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.. In a temporary hinder, the combination with the (:FWBIS, of binding strips extending between the covers, a bar to which said bindmg strips are connected disposed on one of the covers for sliding longitudinal movemerit, a friction clutch member mounted on the cover to coact with said bar and so that its bar engaging movement is toward the inner end of the cover, said member being automatically released by the outward movement of the bar, a spring disposed to urge the clutch member to its clutching position, and a lever for disengaging said clutch.
2. In a temporary hinder the combination with the covers and a binding strip extending between the covers, of a bar to which said binding strip is connected mounted on one of the covers for longitudinal movement, a spring actuated friction clutch coacting with said bar and arranged so that its engaging movement is toward the inner Copies of this patient may be obtained for end of the cover, and a lever for disengaging said clutch. V 8. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers and a binding strip extendin between the covers of a bar to which sald binding strip is connected mounted on one of the covers for longitudinal movement, a spring actuated friction clutch coacting with said bar and arranged so that its engaging movement is toward the inner end of the cover, and means for disengaging five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, I Washington, D. C.
