Patented July 6,1875.
INVENTEIFL. fiwuw fa WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ORLANDO JENNESS, OF ALTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,236, dated July 6, 1875; application filed May 12, 1575.
To all whom it may concern: ,r
Be it known that I, ORL no JENNEss, of Alton, in the county of and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Impror'ements in Brushes for Polishing Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de' scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in brushes for polishing stoves; and it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of an adjustable pivoted handle therewith, as hereinafter set forth and claimed, whereby an article of great simplicity and easy manipulation is produced.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention.
A represents a polishing-brush, having upon its upper side, near one end, a smaller brush, B, intended for blacking the stove. To the upper side of the brush A, extending lengthwise, is secured a piece of wood or metal in the form of a semicircle, F, and to this is pivoted the bifurcated end of the handle 0. above the semicircular attachment, is a spring-catch, D, the point of which projects and enters one of the several holes in the upper edge of the semicircle, by which the handle is secured at any desired angle. The
knob bin the slot 9 serves to withdraw the In a central opening in the handle,
point of the catch from the holes, and to re lease the handle. Not only does the handle make the work of polishing a stove easier to the operator, on account of the facility with which every part of the stove can be reached, but it also does away with the unpleasantness of inhaling the dust inevitably arising when the work is going on, and which proves injurious to those who have much of this kind of work to do. The changes in theposition of the handle are readily made, and no great skill is required to learn how to use the brush to the greatest advantage.
I am aware that a brush provided with two notched segmental plates and an adjustable handle pivoted thereto is old, and I do not, therefore, broadly claim an adjustable pivoted handle; but
Having thus described my invention, I claim The handle (3, bifurcated at one end for attachment to the single segmental piece F, and carrying the spring-catch D in a central longitudinal opening, having a slot at one side thereof for the operating knob 12 to work in, all combined and arranged substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of May, 1875.
