TOOTH-BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,624, dated. September 19, 1882.

Be it known that 1, Lotus CHEVALLIER, a citizen of the United States,residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is especially adapted to tooth brushes, but also to other brushes with handles, and is an improvement on the brushes described in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me September 13, 1881, No. fZeLLOlZ.

The objectof myprescnt invention is, among others, to simplify or cheapen the manufacture of the brushes and impart thereto the required strength; and it consists in the combination, with a brush having a handle projecting from the back thereof, of an elastic bulb arranged on the handle and a water-feed tube which opens into or among the bristles of the brush at one end and communicates with the bulb at its opposite end. Such tube is arranged by preference on the exterior of the back and handle, and extends through the handle in an oblique direction at the end where it communicates with the bulb, thus allowing the inner end of the bulb to be brought opposite to a plain or stnoth portion of the handle. In order to give the bulb a superior hold upon the bandle, it is made open at both ends, and the hair dle is passed entirely through it. This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents alongitudinal central section. Fig. 2is a top view.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.

The letter A designates the back of the brush, having the bristles applied thereto in any usual or suitable manner, and B the handle projecting from the back.

O indicates the elastic bulb, and D the waterfeed tube. In a central portion of the back is formed a hole, e,through which the tube D extends at one end,so that such end is open to the mass of bristles. The tube extends from the point referred to along the back and a portion of the handle on the exterior thereof, and

thence through the handle in an oblique direction to the interior of the bulb, thus communicating at its outer end with the bulb. Openings suitable for receiving the handle are made at two points and obtain a double bearing, the inner end of the bulb being upon the plain portion of the handle without or next to the place at which the tube enters the handle in its oblique passage through it.

By the employment of the tube D, I avoid the necessity of boring the handle atits junction with the back, and thus leave the article possessed of the required strength at thatpoint,

while I am also enabled thereby to manufacture the brushes with facility and at low cost. The oblique passage of the tube through the handle, moreover, by allowing the inner end of the bulb to be brought upon the plain portion of the handle referred to, is favorable to a tight. joint betweenthe bulb and handle. The double bearing of the bulb obviously gives the same a superior hold on the handle, and hence it is least liable to slip or work off.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, substantially as hereinbel'ore set forth, with the brush having a handle projecting from the back thereof, of the elastic bulb arranged on the handle, and the water-feed tube on the exterior of the back and handle, opening into the mass of bristles at one end and communicating with the bulb at its opposite end.

2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore-set forth, with the brush having a bandle projecting from the back thereof, of the water-feed tube on the exterior of the back and handle, opening into the mass of bristles at one end and extending obliquely through the handle at the other end, and the elastic bulb arranged on the handle in communication with the water-feed tube and with its inner end upon a plain portion of the handle.
