UNITED STATES .tllllftltfllll't S. LYHIQ'E, (3F BBYIDGHPDRT, UUNNECTICUT.
VANITY .ltpptieation filed August .5,
'lihis invention relates to vanity boxes and has for an object to provide a hot. of this character which will. be neat and attractive in appearance and may be easily carried in a ladys hand bag, and e pecially provided with an improved construction for carrying loose powder which. is at all times available for use with a pull, and in which the supply of powder may be easily renewed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, I have devised the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing form ing a part of this specification, similar reference characters being employed throu lr out the various figures to indicate corre sponding elements In this drawing,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation o't my improved box. in open position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the box closed and on a somewhat enlarged scale.
Fig. l is a detail of a spring catch for removably holding the powder container in the box, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the loose pow der container removed from the box and with the cover raised.
The box comprises the usual body section and cover section 11 hinged together at one side by the hinge 12, the upper edge of the body preferably beinp; reduced in diameter shown at 13, so as to telescope into the open side of the cover s ction when it is in closed position to give a neat and attractive appearance and also a tight closure.
lfn one of these sections, preferably the bottom or body section, I mount a loose powder container comprisin a body member It and a cover therefor 15. This container is made of sheet metal and cupped as illustrated to form a receptacle for the loose powder 16. and is provided with an outwardly extending; annular flange 17 about its upper periphery. This flan go is also preterably turned downwardly at its outer edge as shown at 18 to term a short flange to give a neater appearance and facilitate mounting of the container in the box. This arrangement also greatly stitlens the flange 1? so that it is not easily bent out of shape. 'llhe cover is depressed at its central portion, as shown, and is of a size to fit into the body member 14:. as shown in Fig. 3, and has an outwardly extending flange 19 which rests on the top of the flange 1? ol the body member. This cover is hinged to Serial No. tests.
the flange 1'? as indicated at 20, and on its opposite side is provided with a ring 21 for lifting the cover to give access to the container for refilling the container with powder. The bottom of the depressed portion of the cover is provided with pertora tions 22 to allow passage of the powder from the container.
The container may be secured in the box in various ways but that shown is a simple and easily assembled means and allows for removal. of the container if desired, and also allows for the easy insertion of a new container with fresh powder. This securinn means comprises a projection on one side, in the present case, a spring 23 forming a catch for holding); the cover 11 closed, this spring being; secured to the side wall of the body 10 by any suitable means as a rivet It is free to swing in at its opposite end where it carries a lug 25 to engage a slit or recess 26 in the side wall of the cover 11 to secure the cover in closed position, and
it is provided with a lug 27 extending through an opening in the wall of the body 10 where it may be pressed inwardly by the thumb of the user to release the catch and allow opening; of the box. It will be noted in Fig. 3 that the outer periphery of the flange 1'? projects under the spring; 23 so that this side of the container 14 is held against outward movement by this spring. On the opposite side oil. the box a spring: 28 which has a yieldable tongue 29 carrying: a lug or projection 30 which may extend over the top of the flange 17. This spring may be conveniently mounted by means of 31 on the hinge member 32. In as semblinn', these cars are passed through openings 33 in the side wall. of the body 10 and then bent over the. ends of the member 23. shown in 4t. lt will. be apparent that lllQSSlllfl the tongue 29 oiulwardly will release the loose powder container and allow its removal from the box. and that it may be as easily returned to the box by mere r inserting one edge under the spring 23 and pressing; its opposite edge past the lung 30.
It will be noted that the shape of the cover 15 forms a tight lit with the vertical. walls of the body member 141. and at right angles to this the flanges 17 and 19 have an. other close lit. This arrangement forms a joint which will effectively prevent leakage of the powder from the container. The de pression in the cover also forms a reress or ill.)
' closed, effectively closing the perforations ti-ons, means for retaining loose powder in for any powder PEIfOIElilOHS and is not tahenup by the pad,
is retained in the depress and preventing passage of the powder from the container to the remaining portions ol the box. Li-omelet the powder will, howerer, pass'to the putt in ordinary handling' of the box so that it will been the puff for ready application to the shin. More powder may be passed from the container to the putt by merely tapping thecover with the pull: or by v inverting-the box.
The depressedportion 0t er also forms a convenient receptacle that may pass through the the cor the a ert walls at the cover preventing this powder. passing into the other portions of the box or being spillce and this powder in by he puff when thevbox is closed.
The frame 36 carrying the mirror may be lunged to ring 38 mounted in the cover 11,
which ring may have lugs 39 for engaging "the edge eta compact 4310, and the ring 38 mayhare a flange or rib ll against which the back of the mirror frame rests to form a closed compartment for this compact and the put? 42 for use therewith.
Having thus set forth the nature of my vinvent-ion, whatl claim is:
l.:In a vanity box, body and cover secone of thesections comprising a horizontally extending annular flange about an opening therein, a hinged rover for said opening depressed at its central portion to provide a well about the periphery olfsaid portion and at substantially right angles thereto to fit into said opening and provided with an onwar lly extending l'la-ng'e at the outer edge of said Wall to rest on the first mentioned flange, said depressedportion of the cover forming a holder for a puff and provided with perforations in its bottom wall for passage of powder from the container to the putt.
2. In a vanity box, body and cover sec- .tlang'e at the outer edge ot said pressed at its net cupped portion of the member and provided tions, a loose powder container mounted in one of the sections comprising a cupped member having an outwardly extending); annular flange about its upper periphery, and a hinged cover for said member, sa d cow-3' being depressed at its central portion to provide a substantially cylindrical wall about the periphery o'l' said central portion to lit into the cupped portion of the member and presided with an outwardly extending; rail to rest on the top of the first mentioned flange, said depressed. portion of the cover being; protitled with op-enin for past ge oi! powder from the container.
In a vanity box, body and cover rections, a loose powder crmtaincr nnumted in one 01" the sections comprising a cupped member having an outwardly extending annular flange about its upper periphery, a perforated hinged corer for said member deend portion to tit into the with an outwardly extending: lungs to rest on the tirst mentioned dung. and means for rcmorably securing: the oontainor in said section comprising a projection on opposite sides of the container to enga rge the laugh thereon, one of said projections being mounted on a spring to yield outwardly to allow passage oi? the edge of said flange.
41-. In a vanity box, hinged body and 1 o sections, a loose powder container .t'or one oi the sections comprising a cupped member having, an outwardly extending; llangc. :1 cover hinged to said ilangre and having :1 dc pressed central portion providing a side wall about the periphery of said central portion and substantially normal thereto to lit into the cupped member and also baring; wardly extending; flung" a t the outer the side wall to rcst on the :llann'e of said member, said demo-sod portion of the cover forming a holder tor a pull? and provided with perforations in its bottom wall i'oi' pas: sage oi powd'r from the container to ilzo putt, and means 'hirsecuring the rmd'rinrr in one of the sections.
In testimony whereoi l aliix my signature.
an out ANKER S. LYil'lwlu.
