Description

Oct. 25, 1927.
v. ZIMMERMAN I VENTILATED HAT Filed Dec. 10. 1926 Inventor Vz'atai 26777772 277774 70,
Patented Oct. 25, 1927.
UNITED STATES VICTOR ZIMMERMA'N, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
'VENTILATED HAT.
Application filed December 10, 1926. Serial No. 153,998.
The present invention relates to ventilated hats, particularly straw hats, and has for its prime object to improve upon the hat structure disclosed in my pending appli- I cation bearing Serial No. 141,155 filed October 12, 1926.
Another important object of the invention lies in the formationof a ventilated hat of this nature wherein it is possible to utihze i a. very thin hat band to allow'the air to circulate therethrough but to prevent the openings in the ventilated hat from belng seen by the provision of a background.
Another very important object of the 111- vention lies in the provision of an improved ventilated hat structure of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable and otherwise well adapted to the pur 2" pose for which it is designed.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel features of construction hereinafter more fully de scribed and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional detail perspective view of a portion of the ventilated hat,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the straw hat illustrated includes a side wall 6 and a rim 7. These elements may be of any preferred configura tion, size or material but I have particularly in mind the straw hat now commonly iii use during the summer months. In the side wall 6 I provide a plurality of open ings 8 which are reinforced by elements 9 which may be in the form of the well known tubular rivets. These rivets hold in place the paper lining 10 on the exterior surface of the wall 6. A cloth band 11 is disposed about the exterior of the lining 10 and covers the openings and rivets so that they may not be visible from the exterior of the hat. In this improved structure I contemplate the use of an exceedingly thin cloth band so as to afford ready passage to the air through the openings and rivets. In order to prevent the light shining through these openings because of the thinness of the hat band 11 a background 12 is provided held in place on the interior of the wall 6 by spacing elements 14 and having a plurality of openings 15 disposed above and out of registration with 'and having openings registered the openings 8. The usual foraminous lining 16 may be used without interfering with the improvements. This background strip 12 extends down to a point between the wall 6 and the sweat band 17. In thispreferred embodiment of the invention there is a single annular row of the openings 8 and three annular rows of the openings 15.
This construction permits a more efficient ventilation within the straw hat than is possible with the structure disclosed in my said co pending' application since it is possible to use the very thin hat band 11. The position of the background prevents the visibility the openings 8 and their rivets S) from the exterior of the hat and also, of
course, from the interior of the hat but this latter is not as important as the former.
The paper lining 10 serves the ordinary well known purpose common in the art. It
will be noticed however that by reason of the arrangement of the outer flanges of the rivets 9 as best shown in Figure :2, the said outer flanges of the rivets 9 will tend to prevent casual upward movement of the lining 10 from its position between the exterior band 11, and the side wall 6 of the hat body.
The presentembodiment of the improvement has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description but it will be quite apparent that changes in the details of construction may be resorted t without departingfrom the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
In a ventilated hat, and in combination.
a side wall having a plurality of spaced openings therein, tubular rivets disposed in said openings and having flanges at the inner and outer sides of the side wall of the hat, a cloth hat band disposed about the side wall of the hat over the said openings and the outer flanges of the rivets, and a paper lining interposed between said band and the side wall of the hat and held by the outer flanges ofthe rivets against casual'movement with the openings through the tubular rivets.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
VICTOR ZIMMERMAN.
