Louis I. rnKowsKY,
OF NEW YGRK, N. Y.
CLOTH new.'
Application filed .Tny 18,
rlhis invention relates to improvements in cloth hats 'for children, and has 'tor one o'l' its objects the provision olE a oliilds hat havvzo ing a Vflexible zone or are;y at the juncture oit the crown and brim thereoil, to permit 'the hat to be expanderfl within limits oit several hat sizes.
Another object of the invention to provide in a hat oli this nature, an elastic band having meansr thereon whereby the crown and brim oit the hat may bersuitably joined to provide a stretchable area at the portion of the hat which lits about the head oit the wearer so that the hat will more readily con- :iiorm to the shape ofthe head and stretch within limits embracing several hat sizes.
A further object of the invention is to prolduce a hat of thisI nature in which the mavimum simplicity of construction is secured..
A still further object oi the invention is to provide a hat of this nature with a hat band so attached thereto as not to hinder or restrict the expansibility of the said hat.
Other objects and advantages rwill appear as the nature of the improvements is' better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel arrangement and co-relation. oit parts herein fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to describe corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then .finally pointed ont and specifically defined and'indicatedin the appended claims. o
The disclosure made the basis of exemplilying the present inventive concept suggests a practical embodiment thereof, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact4 details of this disclosure, and the latter, thereA iore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification:
Figure l is a side view in elevation o' one form of my improved hat with a portion oifthe said band and the crown 6 andhnitted the brim broken away.
Fig. 2 is a similar View partly in sec tion.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental sectional view show? ing a mod itied form of my invention, c
Fig. 4 is a cross section of a modified t'orm oli' the :flexible band.
1928. Serial No. 283,587.
`Fig. 5 is a side view in elevation ot another cmbodin'ient o'li my invention and F G a view similar to Fig. 5 partly in section. l Referring now 'to Figs. l and 2 ci the drawings, 5 indicates a child s hat preferably .made of cloth provided with a crown 6 and a brim 7. Intermediate the lower end 8 oi the crown G and the lower-turned over end 9 ot the brim 7, 'I have provided a stretchable band l() preferably made oi? a knitted fabric and provided with a central portion il terminating at the top and bottom thereof in substantially V shaped channel sections 'l2 and 12S respectively. The lower end S of the crown (3 extends'into the channel l2 and is secure( therein by a row of stitches la and the brim end 9 is similarly secured in the channel 13 by a row of stitches 15.
In F ig. 3, I have shown a modified form ot my invention, in which the flexible area ,is provided by means of an inner knitted stretchable band 16 and an outer similar band 17 between which the crown and brim is securedby rows of stitches 18 and 19 respectively.
In Fig. 4L I have shown another modified form of the flexible zone forming means which consists of ank inner iieXibleband 20,
an outer :liexible band 2l 'united near theiry top and bottom edges, by rows of stitches 22 and 23 or by any other suitable means, to torni npperand lower channels 24. and 25, in which the crown and brim of the hat is secured. y
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, wherein Ihave shown another embodiment oi my invention,
30 indicates an onterha't band secured by f a row of stitches 3l to the inner fold of the brim 7. The hat band is secured to the said fold before it is bent over.
It will be noted by referringr to Fig. 6 that by securing the hat band '30 to the brim 7 an annular space 32 is provided between It will be noted that in-all the forms oit f my yinvention inst described there is provided a space of considerable width between v the crown and brim1 thus permitting full expansion of the hat at this zone Withont provided a hat of simple and eilieient con-V struction and one that will readily stretch Within limits embracing several hat sizes, and will snugly lit the hea-d of the wearer Without binding.
Having described Vmy invention what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patentis: l 1 f 1. A hateomprising a crown and brim, an elastic area intermediate the adjacent edges of the said Crownand brimy and a hat band secured to the brim spaced from' the crown, and unattached thereto to permit the hat to eX aand at the said area.
2. A hat Comprising a Crown andrbrim with their adjacent edges in spaced relation Y vLoUrs I. PEKoWsKY.
