.DIVLAN, AND HENRY MIN- Application filedoctcb cl 20, 1924. Serial No. 744,597.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnwAnn *Wrrrcorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Hat, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hats, and consists in the novel construction hereinafter disclosed.
An object of the invention is to provide in a hat having a flexible brim and crown. a device whereby the brim and crown will be supported in selected adjustments;
Another object of the invention is to provvide a hat structure. the body of which is formed from a plurality of alternate strands of straw braid and reinforcing; waterproofiing fabric. I
Additional advantages of the structure will be apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the ac companyingdrawing, in which- Fig. 1 is an outline elevation of the hat. Fig. 2 is across section on the line 2-2 ofFigzl. i Fig. 3 is aplan view of a section of the hat structure. Fig. 41 is a cross section on the line 4- 1.- of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing the brim of the hat and the crown are made up oi spirally disposed alternate layers of straw braid 1 and waterproof fabric 2. The waterproof fabric is first stitched. to the marginal edge of the braid by a row of stitching; 3 and the over lapping edge of the adjacent rows of braid are: stitched together by a row of stitching i, the stitching passing through the intermediate layer of waterproofing material. This construction provides a tight joint between the edges of the adjacent rows of braid and makes the hat structure substantiallywatertight, while at the same time it is relatively light in weight.
The hat comprises a brim 5 and a crown 6, separately made'and connected together by a ventilating strip 7. In order to preserve a uniform roll to the sides of the brim of the hat and also to support the crown there is provided a continuous piece of wire the end sections 8 of which are seated respec tively at the edges of the brim and are curved downwardly over the top wall of the brim.
The sections 8 pass through openings 9- at the juncture of the brim and crown and are curved upwardly against. the inner surface of the crown forming a curved or arched portion 10 supporting the inner wall of the crown to hold it in shape. The wire is flexible but has sufficient stiffness to hold an adjustment after it has been bent in place. The wire is preferably held in place by a row of stitching- 11.
A sweat band 12 is placed within the hat and over the lower edge of the inner section of the portion 10 of the wire support. The hat may be provided with the usual decorative ribbon 13.
I am aware that the invention may be modified in certain particulars without dcparting from the spirit and scope thereof. I do not limit myself therefore to exact cone struction shown and described, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. A hat composed primarily of alternate row of straw braid and strips of waterproofinn; material, said rows of braid and strips being secured together and. overlapping at miljacent edges. I 1
2. A hat composed of alternate rows of braid arranged in stepped relationship, and an intermediate strip of waterproofing ma terial extending across the adjacent edges of the braid, a row of stitching securing the strip of waterproofing material to the braid section, and a row of stitching passing; through and securing adjacent rows of braid and the intermediate strip of waterproofing material together. i
3. A hat comprising a crown, a. flexible brim in connection with the crown, and a piece of wire crossing the inside of the crown jacent to the union of: the crown and the brim and having its ends extending" outwardly over the brim at opposite sides of 10 the crown and its intermediate portion inside and contacting with the crown, and means securing said Wire to the brim and to the crown.
