CONVERTIBLE HAT. APPLICATION FILED 1ULY28.1919.
Patented July 20, 1920.
THOMAS S. KNOTTS, F LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
CONVERTIBLE I-IAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
Application filed July 28, 1919. Serial No. 313,688.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. KNo'rrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Hats, of which the following is a specification.
invention relates to hats and particularly to an improved construct-ion for controlling the ventilation of the hat to meet construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in'the several views and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a cap embodying my invention and shown partly inclevation and partly in section, the ventilating structure being in open position;
Fig. 2, a fragment of what is shown in Fig. 1 with the ventilating structure in closed position;
Fig. 3, a section on the line 33 of Fig.
1; and
Fig. 4:, a section on the line 4: 4: of Fig. 2. Referring to the drawings A indicates generally a military cap the crown of which is formed of foraminous material B, preferably woven wire cloth, which is pressed to the desired shape and provided with a suitable covering on its top and the upper portion of its side, while a corresponding covering 11 is provided around the lower portion of its side. The covers 10 and 11 have their adjacent edges spaced so as to leave a portion 12 of the foraminous material exposed to provide the necessary ventilating openings. The crown is provided interiorly with the usual sweat band 13. Movable longitudinally between the crown and the sweat band 13 is an annular shutter 14 which is normally held in uncovering relation to the exposed portion 12 of the foraminous material by means of elastics 15 which are secured at their lower ends to the crown and at their upper ends to the shutter 14.. When the shutter 14 is moved into covering relation with respect to the exposed portion 12 of the foraminous material the elastics 15 are tensioned and the shutter is held under such conditions by cooperating fastening devices 15 and 16 on the shutter and crown respectively. It will be obvious that when the shutter is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the desired ventilationcan be had through the exposed portion of the foraminous material, while movement of the shutter to the position shown in Fig. 1 will prevent circulation of air in a manner through the exposed foraniinous material 12.
' While I have described one particular form of carrying my invention into practice it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In a hat, a crown portion having openings in the side thereof, a shutter movable longitudinally with respect to the crown to cover and uncover said openings, means constantly tending to hold said shutter out of covering relation to the openings, and means for positively and detachably securing the shutter in covering relation to said openings.
2. In a hat, a crown portion having openings in the side thereof, a shutter movable longitudinally with respect to the crown to cover and uncover said openings, elastic elements secured to the crown and shutter In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 7 signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS S. KNOTTS.
