Application filed April 7,
"Another object of my invention is toprovvides'a tobacco pipe with a device having a movable member that assists in packing the tobacco in the device and that willhold the tobacco away from the bottom of the pipebowl, thereby forming a chamber in the device'below the tobacco. v
Another object of y isjto pro- .vide the bowl of ajtobaccopipe with-a 'devicejadapted to materially assist the"burning of the tobacco','whereby the tobacco'is completely burnt up, thereby leaving *no esidue' of-tob'acco or heel in the pipe,'-in smoking the pipe. 4 p Further objects of my invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such fadevice, whereby tobacco pipes are greatly improved and thecost of manufacturing the device is reduced to aminimum.
My 'inventionconsistsin the peculiar and novel construction of an auxiliary tobacco burning'device for tobacco pipes, said device having details of construction, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tobacco pipe provided with my improved tobacco burning device.
Figure 2 is a side view of the pipe with the pipe bowl in section and showing my improved'tobacco burning device in full lines, in the bowl of thepipe.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional View of. the tobacco burning device.
Figure 4: is an enlarged top plan view of the movable member of the device, and
Figure 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the movable member ofthe device, taken on line 5, 5, of Figure 4. v
In the drawing 1 indicates a tobacco smoking pipe and 2 my improved tobacco burning device for tobacco smoking pipes.
. The tobacco pipe 1 has the usual bowl 3 in which is atobacco cavity 4 having the usual side walls 5, 5, and bottom 6. The pipe stem 7 has the usual smoke duct 8, entering 1927. "Serial no. 181,862.
shownin'Figure 2 I My improved tobacco burning device' 2 the bottom 6 of the tobacco cavity 4,155
consists essentially; of a thin metalhollow body member9 and a-movable tobacco packing and chamber formingmember 10. "'The body member 9 is circular in :cross section andhas anopentop 11' and tapered sides 12, 12,1nerging into a roundedb'ottom I x F T DI-STAT :13 in which is a vertical central stem'opening 14. In the tapered sides 12, 1 2, are pref erably six vertical slots 15, and secured at the open top 11 are small oppositely disposed and outwardly extending lugs l6, 16. Each lug 16 is formed of aflat strip of metal .and' bent around the open top 11 througha slot 15; as shown in Figure 3.
The movab e; tobacco packing and chamber forming 'membe'r 10 consists'of a round fstem 17 which extends inward throughthe stem opening. 141 in the body member 9. Se-
cured to the top'of'the stem 17 isa fiat disk which extend outward through the slots 15, 15, in; the body member 9," and on the lower end of the stem 17 isanut- 20 secured to the end of the stem, as shown in Figures land I 18 having preferably six radial arms 19, 19,
.5. When the device is out of the pipe bowl for filling with tobacco the disk 18 is nor-' mally downnear the bottom13 ofjthe device, as shown in Figure 3. V r I When .inuse my improved tobacco burning device 2 is preferably first filled loosely with tobacco, inserted into the pipe bowl and then pressed downward into the pipe bowl with a finger on the tobacco. The small lugs 16, 16, now rest on the top rim of the pipe bowl and the lower end of the stem 17 contacting with thebottom 6 of the, pipe bowl forces the disk 18 upwards, thus giving the required amount of packing to the tobacco. The disk 18 is now in the position, as shown in Figure 2, and with the sides 12, 12,and the bottom 13 of the device, forms a moisture proof chamber'21 below the tobacco. The device when inserted into the pipe bowl also forms a circular side chamber 22, between the device and the circular inside walls 5, 5. of the pipe bowl and a moisture collecting chamber 23 in the bottom 6 of the pipe bowl, below the bottom 13 of the device, as shown in Figure 2.
A tobacco pipe provided with my improved tobacco burner gives a dry cool smoke, dry because the tobacco is kept entirely away from the bottom of the pipe bowl where moisture collects in smoking the pipe and cool, as a predetermined amount of air is drawn into the pipe through the eircular side chamber 22, in the pipe bowl. Also as the tobacco is kept dry it will now burn through the slots 15, 15, in the sides 12, 12, of the device to a clean ash, thereby leaving no tobacco residue in the bowl oi the pipe.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new 1. In a device 01" the nature described, a thin hollow body member having sides, an open top and a vclosed bottom in which is a stem opening, said sides having a plu 'ality otslots, a movable member having a stem extending through the stem opening in the body member, a disk on the inner end of the stem, said disk having arms extending through the slots in the body member, for the purpose as described.
2. In a device of the nature described, a thin hollow body member having sides in which are a series of slots, an open top and a closed bottom, having a stem opening, a movable member having a stem extending through the stem opening in the body 1nember, av disk on the inner end of the stem, said disk having arms extending outwardly through the slots in the body member and small lugs at the to) of the body member, for the purpose as eseribed.
3; In a device of the nature described, a thin metal hollow body member having tapered sides in which are a series of slots, an open top and a closed bottom having a stem opening, a movable member having a stem extending inwards through the stem opening in the body member, a disk on the inner end of the stem and having radial arms extending through the slots in the body member, for the purpose as described.
t. In a device of the nature described, a thin metal hollow body member having tapered sides in which are a series of longitudinal slots, an open top on which are outwardly extending small lugs, and a closed bottom in which is a central stem opening, a movable member having a stem, extending inwards through the stem opening in the bottom or the body member, a flat disk on the inner end of the stem and having radial arms extending outward through the slots in the body member, for the purpose as de scribed. y i
5. In a device oil? the. nature described, a thin metal hollow body member, circular in cross section and having an open top on which are small outwardly extending lugs, tapered sides in which are a iplurality of longitudinal slots and a closed rounded bottom in which is a central stem opening, a movable member having a stem extending into the body member through the stem opening, a flat disk on the inner end of the stem and having radial arms extending outward through the slots in the body member and a nuton the outer end of the stem, whereby when the device is in use in the bowl of a tobacco pipe, a circular chamber is termed intermediate the device and the inner walls of the pipe bowl, a chamber is gtormed intermediate the disk on the movable member and the bottom of the body member and a chamber is formed in the bottom of: the pipe bowl below the bottom of the body member, for the purpose as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
ENGELBERT BIBER.
