WITNESSES j I I INVENTOI? I d 7 BY Z A TTOHNE Y8 tea PIPE
Specification of Letters atent. Patented Aug. 27, 19184:
Application filed May 6, 1918. Serial No. 232,915.
' a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dunseith, in the county of Rolette and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes, oi? which the following is a speclfication.
My invention is an improvement in pipes, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified wherein a smoke chamber or bore is provided at one side of the tobacco chamber with which the said tobacco chamber communicates by a series of openings spaced apart vertically from each other, and wherein means is provided in connection with each opening for plugging the same, operable outslde the pipe, the smoke bore or chamber havlng also re movable ends to facilitate cleaning of the same.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved pipe;
Fig.2 is a partial longitudinal section;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showin a modified construction.
11 the present embodiment of the invention, the improved pipe, which may be of any desired material, as, for instance, wood, comprises a bowl or tobacco chamber 1, a stem portion 2 and a bit 3. At the front of the tobacco chamber is provided a smoke chamber which extends vertically from the top of the tobacco chamber below the bottom thereof, communicating with the bore oi the stem portion 2.
The smoke chamber 4 is open at both ends, the upper end being closed by a pivoted cover 5 and the lower end by a removable plug 6. By swinging the cover aside and removing the plug access is permitted to the full extent of the smoke chamber.
The tobacco chamber communicates with the smoke chamber by a series of openings, three in the present instance, the said openings being indicated at 7, 8 and 9, respectively, the openings being spaced apart in a vertical row. The outer wall of the smoke chamber has an opening 10 in alinement with each of the openings 7, 8' and 9, and in each of these 0 enings 10 is mounted a plunger 11, each p unger having a head at its outer end, for convenience in manipulating the same. The plungers at their inner ends are of a size to fit the openings 7, 8 and 9 and to'close the same when they are shoved inwardly, as indicated at the top of Fig. 2.
In use, the pipe is filled in the usual manner, the tobacco being placed in the tobacco chamber, and all of the plungers 2 withdrawn as indicated in Fig. 1. The tobacco s now lighted in the usual manner and when 1t is burned below the openin 9 the plunger 11 thereof is moved into close position indi cated at the top of Fig. 2. The smoke now passes through the opening 8 until thetobacco burns below the said opening, when this opening 8 is closed and the smoke passes through the opening 7. The pushing in of the plunger also cleans the openings 7, 8 and 9. I
With the improved pipe the moisture from the burning tobacco will not pass through the whole of the load, thus making the tobacco soggy and strong in an increasing amount as it burns down, but will only pass through that depth of the tobacco between two smoke openings. This construction of pipe eliminates the unpleasant bubbling of the moisture condensed in the stem and prevents clogging of the same. The tar condensed in the smoke passages may be easily cleaned, by means of a swab passed entirely through the smoke chamber.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 3, the bowl 12 has two smoke chambers 13, one at the frontand one at the rear of the bowl, that is, one at the bit and one at the opposite side of the bowl from the bit. Two openings lalead from each smoke chamber to the bowl, and plungers 15 are mounted to slide in openings 16 in the outer walls of the smoke chambers, the said openings 16 alining with the openings 14. The smoke chambers communicate with the-bore of the stem portion .17 of the pipe, and there is an opening at the bottom of that smoke chamber remote from the bit, which is normally closed by a plug 18. The operation is the same as in the construction of Figs. 1 and 2, but there will be a freer draft because of the oppositely arranged openings 14. The tops of the smoke chambers are covered b plates 19 in the same manner as the top 0 the smoke chamber 4 is covered.
-I claim: v
1. A pipe comprising a bowl consisting of a tobacco chamber, a smoke chamber and tobacco chamber and communicating with the bore of the stem portion at the bottom of the smoke chamber and with the tobacco chamber by a series of openings spaced apart Vertically from each other, a plunger sliclable in the outer Wall of the smoke chamber at each opening and designed to engage and close and clean the same when pushcct inwardly, and removable closures at the ends of the smoke chamber.
2. A pipe comprising a bowl consisting of a tobacco hamber, a smoke chamber and stem, a bit connected with the stem, said smoke chamber extending up alongside the tobacco chamber and communicating with the bore of the stem portion at the bottom of the smoke chamber and with the tobacco chamber by a series of openings spacecl apart vertically from each other, and a plunger slitlable in the outer Wail of the smoke chamber at each opening and designed to the same when 'ing up alongside the tobacco chamber and communicating with the bore of the stem portion at the bottom of the smokechamhei and With the tobacco hamber by a series of openings spacetl apart vertically from each other, and a plunger slidable in the outer wallsot the smoke chambers ateach opening and designed to engage andl close the samen'hen pushed inwardly.
4-. A. pipe comprising a bowl having a smoke chamber extending upwardly alongside thereof and havin spaced openings opening into the smo (e chamber, said smoke chamber communicating with the stem portion, and a plunger for closing and cleaning each of the said openings.
