This invention relates to drying of smokers pipes.
This invention has utility in converting regular bowl and stem pipes into self-drying structures.

A smokers pipe is shown as having bowl 1 with chamber 2, in the lower portion of which is port 3 from which extends duct 4 laterally from the lower portion of the bowl through stem 5 into mouth piece 6. In proximity to the bowl 1 in carrying out the invention herein, lateral port 7 in the stem 5 extends just past the duct 4. This is in such position and of such proportion as not materially to weaken the general assembly of the stem and bowl, which bowl may be symmetrical. This way or port 7 provides passage for tube 8 having lateral or diametrically disposed flutings 9. These fiutings 9 in the thrusting of the tube 8 into the port or way 7 are in a plane diametrically of the duct 4.
WVhen so assembled in position, a drill inserted through the duct 4 from the mouthpiece side 6 may form ports 10, 11, in align ment with the duct 4 with outwardly projecting flange 12 at the port 11 efiective as anchoring means for this tube 8 against removal from the stem 5. Flat terminus 13 of this port 7 is the bottom of this device.

The flutings 9 serve 'as a guide for partition 14 insertable as a dam between the portsll O, 11. This partition 14 is shown as extending short of the top of the tube 8 in allowing clearance of the port 15 under closure 16 having connection 17 with the partition. Accordingly, with this closure 16 at open top 18' of the tube 8, there is a by-pass in the way from the mouthpiece 6. into the duct 4 as through the port 10 into upwardly rising way 19 on the mouthpiece side, of the partition 14, thence through port 15 and downwardly in way 20 outward through portll into the duct 4 and port 3 as entrance to the chamber 2 of the bowl 1. There is thus a .bypass way damming the flow of moisture saliva from the'smokers mouth as to entrance into the bowl. j V V Y As there may be clogging or accumulation, it is only necessary to remove the "010- sure 16 which therewith takes the partition. 14 out so that usualfcleaning practices may follow in giving the pipe attention by swab from the mouthpiece 6 to the port 3.
Instead of a large tube 8, there may be adopted twin tube 21, 22, having upward terminal opening 23. In this device, way 24 adjacent the symmetrical bowl 25 may have port 26 to duct 4 and port 27 inclined therefrom to go past the duct 4 adjacent the port 3 into the bowl chamber 2. This passage or port 27 extends through to opening 28. The tube portion 21 has cut-away side 29 so that this unit as inserted in the ways 24, 26, 27, allows extension 30 to close the duct 4 as a dam while the tube section 22 as entering the way 27 extends past the duct 4.
The proximity of the tube 22 as intercepting the duct 4 to the port 3 permits direction into the chamber 2 of a drill to make port 31 in the tube 22 so that communication from the duct 4 as dammed at the extension 30 may rise in tube 21 to the vicinity of the openings 23, thence descend in the tube 22 to the port 31 in communication into the chamher 2 of the bowl 25. Extension of the tube 22 beyond the port 31 may be closed with say match stick portion 32. Spring prongs 33 on closure 34 may serve as frictional holding means for the top closure. The tubes 21, 22,
are, as is the tube 8, anchored with this standard symmetrical pipe bowl structure. The removal of the cap 34 permits ready cleaning of the tubes 21, 22, the latter being cleaned throughout by the removal of the match stick 32 plug, which may be readily replaced.
The location of the port 31 at the chamber 2 of the bowl leaves no place for the tobacco to clog this device in the duct 4, for the reason that regular pipe cleaning swabs may be thrust into the device upon removal of the cap 34.
The device as herein disclosed may be lacquered or finished in the desired symmetry with the bowl.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A pipe comprising a bowl having a tubular stem terminating ina mouthpiece, a tube having a sealed anchoring with the stem and extending upward therefrom to emerge alongside of the bowl in bowl abutting proximity, said tube having a partition with the tube in communication on one side of the partition with thebowl and on the other side with the mouthpiece at the tube lower portion, said tube having an upper open end, and a removable closure for the open end.
2. The method of assembling a tube into a smokers pipe having a lateral opening to the stem duct, comprising locating a tube in the opening to intercept the duct, and thrusting a tube wall aligned with the duct outward from the tube into the duct as an anchoring flange.
