ARTHUR A. RIGHARDSON, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSAOHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,036, dated June 1, 1875; application filed March 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. RICHARD- soN, of Leominster, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hats, of which the following is a description as full, clear, and exact as I am at this time able to give, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation, showing a hat provided with my attachment; and Fig. 2, an isometrical perspective view of the attachment detached from the hat.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawing.
My invention relates to means for cooling the head of the wearer, or maintaining an even and cool temperature within the body of the hat in hot weather and consists in a hat provided with a device for holding a sponge or similar" substance saturated with water, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective article of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
It is well known that in hot weather sunstrokes are of frequent occurrence, arising generally from overheating the head. My improvement is designed to obviate this class of accidents, as well as to serve other important purposes, as will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following description:
In the drawing, B represents the hat, and A the holder, consisting of a thin annular metallic plate, provided with the radial points 1) around its periphery, and with the points or lugs 0 near its center, the points being preferably struck up from, or made integral with, the body. An ordinary sponge, D, is secured in the holder by means of the points b, which are bent down over it, as shown in Fig. 2, and the holder is attached to the inner side of the crown of the hat by means of the points 0, these points passing through small perforations made in the crown or lining for that purpose, and being bent down or clinched, as shown in Fig. 1.
The sponge is designed to be saturated with water, the evaporation of which will tend to keep the head cool and maintain an even temperature in the hat. A sponge arranged in this manner is also serviceable in evaporating medicated solutions to prevent diseases or cure affections of the head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is As a new article of manufacture, the holder A, provided with the points I) c, and carrying the sponge D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
