UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL W. GLENN, OF GEORGETOWN, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVE-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,764, dated May 25, 1875 application filed May 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. GLENN, of Georgetown, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain Improvements in Glove-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to glove-fastenings; and the invention consists of a strap provided with eyelets, preferably, so applied as to show on one side only, said strap being attached at one end to one side of the wrist-piece, then passed through a loop, attached to the opposite side, doubled over, and fastened upon a hook, all as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a glove, showing the strap unhooked. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing strap fastened; and Fig. 3 is a sectional View, showing the hook engaging in one of the eyelets, all the views being enlarged, for the purpose of more clearly illustrating the improvement.
This invention is designed especially for application to kid gloves, though it may be used on other styles of gloves as well 5 and it has for its object the furnishing of a glove-fasted ing which can be fastened and unfastened with much greater facility than those in ordinary use, and which can be adjusted to suit difierent-sized wrists.
To construct my improved fastening I provide a small strap, B, preferably made of the same kind and color of material as the glove. This strap B I make by cutting out a strip of the leather of twice the width that the strap is to be when finished and of any required length. 111 this strip Iinsert a series of small eyelets, e, as shown in Fig. 1, after which the strip is folded lengthwise and its two edges fastened together by sewing or otherwise, thus forming a narrow strap of two thicknesses, with a row of eyelets in one side, extending through one thickness only, as shown in Fig. 3. Instead of making the strap of a single piece, doubled or folded, as above described, it may be formed of two separate strips, the eyelets being first inserted in one of them, and the two strips being then united by stitching their edges together. It is also obboth thicknesses, or that a single thickness may be used and the eyelets be inserted in that, these latter answering for the coarser or more common kinds of gloves; but for the finer qualities it is desirable to use the double straps, so that when fastened the eyelets will not show.
Having thus constructed the strap B, I attach one end of it to one side of the glove, preferably using for this purpose an eyelet, d, which has a small lip or hook, c, on one edge, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the strap being attached to the glove, as represented in Fig. 1, with the eyelets outward. To the opposite side of the glove I secure a metallic loop, 0, of such a size as to permit the strap B to pass loosely through it, as shown in Fig. 1. In order to fasten the glove it is only necessary to draw the strap tightly and fold it over, as shown in Fig. 2, at the same time causing the hook c to engage in one of the eyelets e, as represented in Fig. 3. By these means the glove can be drawn up tight and snug and securely fastened with the utmost facility, the eyelets and hook being hidden from view, and the strap, with its metal tip a, forming an ornamental and, at the same time, a most convenient and efficient as well as adjustable fastening.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim isl. A glove-fastening, consisting of the strap B, provided with one or more eyelets, e, in combination with a loop, 0, and hook c, all constructed to operate substantially as herein described.
2. The strap B, composed of two layers or thicknesses, and having the eyelets e inserted through one layer or thickness only, substantially as shown and described.
