IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 63,751, dated May 25, 1875; application filed April 28, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIGMUND DEUTSOH, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which is shown a perspective view of my invention.

The object of my invention is to provide a handy and inexpensive method of constructin g overalls, which shall be more durable than any garment of the kind heretofore produced.

My invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents a pair of overalls made with my improvements. B is the waist-band stitched in the usual manner to the upper edge of the garment, its ends, which pass through loops a a, being continued to form buckle-straps (J O. The strap 0 is furnished with several buttons, 0 c c, and has a button-hole, 0, formed at its extremity. Accordingly as the buttonhole 0 is made to engage with any one of the series of buttons 0 c 0, the buckle-strap may be lengthened or shortened as desired. D is the buckle held in position by passing the strap 0 through its loop (I. When the strap is to be adjusted, the buckle D mustbe slided in or out upon it according to the nature of the adjustment required. The strap may be made of any desired material, the same as, or different from, the material of the overalls, and may terminate with a transverse stay or E represents an opening in the back of the overalls similar to the fly in front, having buttons 0 c, and button-holes e e, by means of which it is closed, and being also crossed by the straps G C. The overalls may be Worn with this opening either in front or behind, thus rendering the garment reversible. F represents an elastic gusset terminating the opening or fly E, and serving to protect the garment from being torn at that point when being put on or taken off.

This gusset is to be distinguished from the elastic gores or pieces usually inserted in garments to allow them to yield. This is not the object of the elastic gusset. It is intended merely to strengthen the seam at the fork of the overalls, and prevent it from ripping. Inelastic gussets have heretofore been used in the same position, but they have been found to rip at their own seams, and are consequently objectionable. The gusset may be applied to a closed seam as well as to an expansible slit.

I do not claim as my invention the application broadly of an elastic piece to an adj ustable slit or opening.

What I claim as my invention is 1. As a new article of manufacture theoveralls A, provided with the elastic gusset F at the fly, and the buckle-straps 0 0 formed in one piece with the waistband strap (J having the button-hole o, and buttons 0 c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with a fly, E, an elastic gusset, F, to prevent tearing, substantially as shown and described.

3. In combination with the buckle'strap 0, attached to the overalls A, the loose slidingbuckle D, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.
