UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
WILLIAM DAVIS, OF PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING TRACE-CARRIERS AND BACK-LOOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,64l, dated May 25, 1875; application filed January 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Drums, of Petaluma, Sonoma county, California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Trace-Carrier and Back-Loop, of which the following is a specification The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a top View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the back-loop, which terminates at each end in circular joint-pieces B B, which are attached to the baclciron O. This loop is curved upward, as seen in Fig. 1.
The back-iron C may be continued from one joint-piece to the other; or it may be dispensed with between the joint-pieces, as may be desired.
v D D are the trace loops or holders, each made of a curved stationary part, D, rigidly attached to the back-iron O, and a part which springs down when pressed upon, marked E. F F are the joint-pins, and G G are the springs, which are placed in the cavities of the jointpieces B B, and bear upward against the piece F with a constant pressure. H H are the joints which these pieces F make with the curved parts D. At the left hand of Fig. 1 it will be seen that there are slots I in the parts D, and tongues J on the ends of the pieces E E. This slot and tongue is also seen in dotiel lines at the right hand of the figure. Both pieces are beveled at the joints, so that the spring-pieces E close tightly onto the ends of the pieces D, while the tongues in the slots keep the pieces E steady and in place. The back-iron O is curved to fit a pad, to which it is fastened by screws or rivets, which pass through the holes K.
The lines of the harness may be drawn through the trace-loops D D, if desired; or these loops may be modified in form in any manner to better accommodate the lines.
This article may be made of iron, brass, or of any suitable metal, and of any size or proportion required. Placed on the pad, it presents a highly-ornamental appearance, while it is eminently useful.
The back-loop A and trace-carrier loops may be made separate, if desired, so that either may be used Without the other.
I do not restrict the application of the device as a harness-saddle proper, but purpose attaching it, in some cases, to the back-strap of a harness, to support the traces from the hips of the horse or other draft animal.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, a compound pad-stiffener and trace-carrier, consisting of the back-iron 0, having a top loop, A, and a trace-loop on each side, as shown and described.
WILLIAM DAVIS.
