Description

y 1 1927- A. H. NOBLE VANITY CASE Filed Dec. 10. 1926 Patented July 12, 1927.
UNITED. STATES PATENT-OFFICE.
ARTHUR H. NOBLE, OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THEODORE W. FOSTER & BROTHER COMPANY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
VANITY CASE.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vanity cases and pertains more particularly to an improvement upon the powder container of Patent No.
51,603,243, of October 12, 1926.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the container which will more effectively prevent accidental or unintended escape of the powder from the container, which attachment affords a trap for the powder so as to prevent the latter from escaping.
The invention further aims to provide a device of the character mentioned, which is of simple and economical construction, and which can be easily and quickly applied.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a plan view of the vanity case with'which the invention is designed for use;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the invention in detached position.
The drawings lllustrate a vanlty case com hinged cover 3 provided with a mirror 4.
The powder holder is composed of a body having a shouldered bottom 10 provided with a central powder-holding depression or well 11, the bottom 10 affording. a ledge which encompasses the well and ies thereabove; A cover 12 is rovided for the well and is formed with a s allow central depression 13 which is of less diameter than that of the internal diameter of the led e 10. The cover 12 is hinged at 14 to the le ge 10 and has a sprin catch 15 and a finger piece 16, the catch 15%)eing formed to spring into an openin 16 provid ed therefor in the top of the b0 above the led e. The powder holder furt or has a depen 'ng rim 18 preferably formed to frictlonally engage with and within the rim 2 of the body 1. v
For the purpose of preventin escape of the powder from the well 11, a elt pad or equivalent 19 is engaged with the cover 12 on the under face of the latter and is secured in place thereon b means of a metal or other disk 20 whic en ages the felt disk. A rivet 21 is extended t rough the disks 19 and 20 and the cover depression 13 and serves to clamp the disk 20 against the pad 19 and the latter against the cover 12.
posed of a body 1 having a rim 2 and a,
Application filed December 10, 1926. Serial No. 153,816.
The felt pad or disk 19 extends beyond the depression 13 and also beyond the clamping disk 20 as to permit its peripheral portion 21 to flare into the ofi'set resultant from the depression 13, which portion 21 provides an effective seal for the well 11, preventing the escape of powder therefrom.
The present invention resides in the provision of a ring 30 having its inner circum ference flanged downwardly at 31. The ring 30 seats on'the ledge 10 and has its peri hery formed to snugly fit against the shoul or or wall 33 which latter encircles the ledge 10. Preferably the ring is frictionally held in position, permitting its easy attachment and removal, so as to allow cleanin of the parts. if desired. By referring to ig. 2, it will be seen that the flange 31 cooperates with the upper-side wall 3 1 of the well 11 to form a circular pocket or trap 32, which will trap the powder and prevent the latter from reaching the pad 21 and thereby escaping. Further, .the flange 31 confronts the peri heral edge of the clamping disk 20 and us provides a further trap 35 which latter allows but a small quantity of the powder to en age the pad.
11 further addition, the ring 30 raises the seat on which the edge 21 of the pad engages, so that a greater degree of compression of the pad'is required as compared with said patent, eifecting a firm seating thereof and spreading to seal the closure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters'Patent is:
1. In a loose powder container, having a powder compartment encompassed by a shouldered ledge, a cover for the compartment having a felt pad and a clamping disk for the pad, a ring seated on the ledge and forming a seat for the pad and being engaged with the shoulder and a flange dependmg from the inner circumference of the ring and spaced from the adjacent side ofthe compartment and from the disk to form a pair of'spaced circular powder traps.
2. 'In a loose powder container, having a powder compartment encompassed by a shouldered ledge,-a cover for the compartment having a felt pad, a ring seated on the ledge and a inst the shoulder and forming m t eet eet here the inner circumference otthe ring" endl e Henge earriedt by the ring amt depend enct spaced, from the etijacent side out the ing therefrom to term it trap in conjunction eempertmerit to form a trap. with the adjacent side Wall of the camper? 3. In cembinetion with e owder e0mment. pertment having it shouldere leelge surle testimony whereof I have signed my mending the same, a cover, a ring tormname to this speeificetien. ing e. seat for the cover frictionally engaged with the shoulder emt seated on the ledge, ARTHUR H. NOBLE.
