CONTAINER FOR COSMETIC POWDER Filed Sept. 4, 1928 James z eslejawgyzwfiaizd Patented Jan. 21, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CONTAINER FOR COSMETIC POWDER Application filed September 4, 1928.
This invention relates to a container for loose cosmetic powder and has to do more particularly with a receptacle frictionally retaining a flanged member and an applicator engaging the flanged member to close the powder compartment.
An object of the invention is to provide a container for loose powder to which an applicator serves to close the opening to the powder compartment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container for cosmetic powder in which the powder compartment is formed by a flanged member frictionally retained in the powder receptacle and with which an applicator cooperates to close the entrance to the powder compartment.
The above, other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description, accompanying drawings and appended claims.
According to the invention, a receptacle is provided with a flanged member made of sheet metal so shaped as to provide a central axial wall for the powder compartment, with a flange extending outwardly from the wall and upturned peripheral portion, the re mainder of the metal then being inturned to provide a separate flange.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the views thereof are as follows:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a container embodying the invention, showing the container partially opened.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the container fully opened.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical section through the powder receptacle.
The drawings illustrate a container comprising a bottom member or receptacle 1, a top 2 shown as hinged at 3 to the receptacle 1, although the invention is not limited to a hinged connection of the top and bottom members.
Serial No. 303,638.
The bottom member or receptacle 1 may be made of metal, bakelite, ivory, or other suitable material, and as shown is circular in plan with a dished bottom 4E and integral circular wall 5, the upper margin of which is shouldered at 6 to receive the top 2.
A flange member formed from sheet metal is frictionally retained within the wall 5 and it consists of an axial wall 7 resting on the bottom 4 of the receptacle and outturned flange 8, an upturned peripheral portion 9 and an inturned flange 10 spaced above the first flange 8, with the opening of the flange 10 preferably of greater diameter than the opening defined by the wall 7. 11The wall 7 defines the powder compartment An applicator or powder puli 12 is placed over the opening defined by the wall 7 to retain the powder in the powder compartment 11 and prevent the same from spillage. The applicator is sprung under the flange 10 and is held against the powder compartment by this flange.
A shifter or sieve 13 is shown as resting on the flange 8 overlying the powder compartment 11. When the sieve is used, the applicator 12 rests on the sieve and holds the same in position.
The top 2 may have a mirror 1% secured 7: therein by a spring ring 15. A projection 16 is formed on the top 2 as an aid in open ing said top.
The applicator 12 is retained in closing po sition by spring or frictional engagement with the upper flange 10 of the flange memher or insert.
WVhile I have described more or less precisely the details of construction of my invention, yet I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto as I am aware that changes may be made in the arrangement and proportion of parts and that equivalents may be substituted, all without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A container for cosmetic powder including a receptacle, a member therein provid- 5 ing a flanged opening therefor, said member having two substantially horizontal inwardly directed spaced flanges, the lower flange having an axial wall extending below the lower flange forming the powder compartment.
2. A container for cosmetic powder includin a receptacle, a member therein providing a anged opening therefor, said member having two substantially horizontal inwardly directed spaced flanges, the lower flange having an axial wall extending below the lower flange forming the powder compartment and an applicator retained in said opening for closing the same by spring engagement with the upper flange.
3. A container for loose powder comprising a receptacle having a flanged member frictionally retained therein defining the opening to the powder compartment, a circular wall depending from said flange opening and providing a powder compartment within said receptacle, a second flange above said first flange integral therewith and parallel thereto, and an applicator overlying said opening and retained thereagainst by said second flange.
4. A container for cosmetic powder comprising a powder receptacle having a member frictionally retained therein formed with a lower flange defining an opening thereto, said member having an upper flange, said flanges having a common peripheral web and a downwardly extending wall integral with the lower flange and inwardly of the periphery thereof defining a powder compartment.
5. A container for cosmetic powder comprising a powder receptacle having a member frictionally retained therein formed with a lower flange defining an opening thereto, said member having an upper flange, said flanges having a common peripheral web, a downwardly extending wall integral with the lower flange and inwardly of the periphery thereof defining a powder compartment, and an applicator retained in said opening by spring engagement with said upper flange.
6. A container for cosmetic powder comprising a receptacle having a flanged opening therein, the flange defining said opening comprising a member frictionally retained within said receptacle, said member comprising a central axial wall defining a well, a radial flange thereabove, an upturned peripheral portion integral with said radial flange and having an upper inwardly directed flange having a central opening of greater diameter than said well, and an ap plicator covering said well and held in position by spring engagement with said inward- \ly directed flange.
