My invention relates to a compact for containing cosmetic powder and relates to one wherein the applicator or powder puil' serves to cork the opening to the powder compartengaging between spaced flanges frictionally retained in the compact.
An object of the invention is to provide a compactfor loose powder wherein the. applicator serves as a closure for the powder compartment. I
Another object is to provide a compact for cosmetic powder in which the applicator is held in position to close the powder opening by engagement between two spaced flanges.
Another object of the invention is to provide a compact having a flanged opening which defines the powder compartment and the entrance thereto in conjunction with another flange spaced above the first flange, with the applicator retained in position to close the powder opening by spring engagement with the second flange.
A further object is to provided a compact having a ring frictionally retained in the powder compartment under which the applicater is passed and by which it is retained in position to close, the opening to the powder compartment.
A further object is to provide a compact having a receptacle for powder. with a wall member frictionally retained within the powder' compartment, which wall member has two vertically spaced flanges between which the applicator is retained for closing the powder opening.
The above, other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the follow ing description, accompanying drawings and appended claims.
According to the invention, a powder receptacle is provided with a flanged opening defining the powder compartment and providing an entrance thereto, which flanged opening is made from a single sheet of metal bent to provide a peripheral rim from which e2:- tend two spaced flanges normal to the rim.
One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings and the views thereof are as follows;

The form of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings comprises a bottom member or receptacle 1, a top 2 which is shown as hinged at 3 to the receptacle 1. I do not wish to be understood as limiting my self to the hinged connection between the top and bottom members as it is of course understood that these may be entirely separate.
The powder receptacle 1 has a dished bottom 4 with a circular wall 5 notched at (3 to receive the marginal flange of the top 2.
The powder compartment 7 is defined by the bottom a of the receptacle and a flange 8 substantially perpendicular to the wall 5.
The flange member carrying the flange 8 is made from a strip of sheet metal bent to form the flange 8, a peripheral web 9 to which the flange 8 is normal, an upper flange or ring 10 extending in the same general direc tion as the flange 8 and a lower margin 11 which rests in the junction bet-ween the bottom 4 and the wall 5 of the receptacle for supporting the flange member in position. The flange 8 is formed by bending back the metal of which the ring is formed on itself and then bending outwardly the end portion to provide the flange 8 which as so formed is of greater horizontal dimension than flange 1O defining an opening through the flange S of less diameter than the opening defined by the flange 10.
The flange 8 defines a central opening 12 through which the powder is reached. The
diameter of the inner opening of the ring 10 is greater than the diameter of the opening 12. 7
An applicator 13 having a diameter less than that of the opening 12 and greater than that in the ringlO closes the opening to the powder compartment by being sprung past the opening in the ring 10 to rest against the flange 8. The applicator being 01" greater dian'iet er. than the opening in the ring 10 eX- tends part way under said ring whereby it is retained in position to close the powder opening. A top 2 may have a mirror 14 secured therein by a ring 15. A projection 16 is formed on the top to aid inopening the same.
VVhile I have described more or less precisely the details of construction of my invention, yet I do not wish to beunderstood as limiting myself thereto as I am aware that changes may be made in the arrangement and proportion of parts and that equivalents: may be substituted, all withoutideparting from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim asmy invention 2 1. A compact for loose powder comprising a powder receptacle having a flanged opening therein, the flange defining said opening comprising a ringzhaving a peripheral web frictionally engaging the wall of said receptacle and being coextensive with the same, a flange intermediate the margins of said. web and normal thereto defining the opening to the powder compartment; and a second flange about the margin of said web spaced above said first flange and with'less width than said first flange. A loose powder compact comprising a receptacle for loose powder, a removable ring frictionally retained in said receptacle and defining the powder opening for the same, said ring having a peripheral web in contact said intermediate flange constituting the enapplicator closing said opening and locked therein by engagement withsaid marginal flange.
5. A container comprising a receptacle, a member adjacent the inside wall thereof and secured thereto, an inwardly extending flange at the upper edge of said member defining an opening into the, receptacle, a reversely bent portion on the lower edge of said member and a second flange below the first flange formed at the upper edge of said reversely bent portion.
6. A compact for loose powder comprising a powder receptacle having a flanged opening therein, a double flanged ring frictionally retained in said receptacleand forming the flange for the same, and an applicator closing the openingand retained in closed position in said opening-by engagement between said double flanges.

A loose powder compact comprising a receptacle forloose powder, a removable ring frictionally retained in said receptacle, said ring comprising a peripheral web coextensive with the inner wall surface of said receptacle and having an upper marginal flangeand an intermediate flange normal to said web, the upper flange defining an opening'of greater 7 size than the intermediate flange and an applicator for closing the opening in said intermediate flange' and locked therein by engagementowith said marginal flange.
4. A loose powder compact comprising a receptacle for loose powder, a removable ring.
