UNITED STATES GRACE M. WILSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PENDANT AND BOIDKIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Application filed May 3, 1919. Serial No. 294,467.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRACE WrLsoN. a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of -Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pendants and Bodkins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In my Patent No. 1,314,723 granted Sept. 2, 1919, there is disclosed a novel bodkm that may be also used as a pendant, and the object of this invention is to simplify the construction formerly disclosed and provide a pendant to which a flexible member may be easily and quickly connected to present a neat and attractive appearance as a pondant.
The mechanical construction entering into this invention will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pendant- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly broken away and partly in section, showing a flexible member held 1n engagement with the pendant;
Fig. 3 is a plan of the same showing the closure member in a closed position;
Fig. 4 is a similar view, partly broken away and partly in section, showing the closure member in an open position;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of the pendant, showing a retaining device or look for the closure member;
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a portion of a modified form of pendant, partly broken away and partly in section;
Fig. 7 is a plan of the same, and
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a modified form of pendant.
A pendant in accordance with my invention comprises a cylindrical body 1 having a long tapering end 2 which permits of the pendant being used as a bodkin to easily pass through an opening of a piece of fabric. The upper or inner end of the body 1 has a neck portion 3 provided with a spherical head 4: and said head has the top thereof provided with a recess 5. The recess 5 has the narrow portion thereof extending axially of the pendant and the side walls of said recess diverge so that one portion of the recess will be of greater area than the remaining portion of said recess, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This recess is adapted to receive the knotted end 6 of a flexible mem her 7, the flexible member extending out of the axial portion of the recess 5.
Shiftable on the spherical head 4 is a closure member 8 that may be moved over said head so as to rotate thereon, said member being peened or reamed under the head to prevent accidental displacement of said member, but not interfere with its rotation on said head. The top of the closure memher 8 is formed with an opening 9 having a shape similar to the open end of the recess 5, so that the opening 9 may be placed in registration with said recess to permit of the knotted end 6 of the flexible member 7 being placed in the recess 5. Then by partially rotating the closure member 8 the opening 9 is shifted out of registration with the recess 5 and cooperates with the head 41 in retaining the knotted end 6 of the flexible member 7 in engagement with said head, the small end of the opening 9 cooperating with the axial portion of the recess 5 in providing clearance for the flexible member 7 so that said member may support the pendant.
To limit and define the movement of the closure member 8 relative to the head 1, said closure member has a side wall thereof cut and stamped to provide a resilient lug or detent 10 having a teat or protuberance 11 and said teat is adapted to snap into diametrically opposed seats or notches 12 in the spherical head 4:, and thus prevent accidental rotative movement of the closure member on the upper end of the pendant.
In Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive'there is illustrated a modification of my invention, wherein a pendant head 13 has a sector shaped recess 14 adapted to receive the knotted or enlarged end of a flexible member. Diametrically opposed walls of the recess 1 1 are parallel and the arc edges of the recess walls are grooved as at 15 to receive the edges of the closure member 16, which may have its edges somewhat dove-tailed so that the grooved walls may be peened or reamed over the edges of the closure member 16 to hold the same in sliding engagement with the head 13.
One end of the closure member 16 is formed with a semicircular recess or opening 17 adapted to cooperate with the wall of the recess 14 in providing an opening through which the flexible member may extend, and the opposite end of the closure member 16 is inbent or formed with a flange 18 extending into the recess 14 to be engaged by a flat compression spring 19 mounted in the bottom wall of the recess 14, said spring holding the closure member 16 normally closed relative to the head 13.
To facilitate opening the closure member 16, the upper or recessed end thereof is provided with a finger piece or teat 20 and since said closure member is flush with the periphery of the head 13, it may be readily shifted by the finger piece 20, yet this finger piece is not of sufiicient size to engage in a piece of fabric or mar the general appearance of the pendant.
The device in its entirety may be constructed of various grades of metal, finished to present a neat and attractive appearance and this is further brought about by having the connection between the flexible member and the pendant practically invisible.
While in the drawing there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
l/Vhat I claim is l. A pendant comprising a body having a solid head provided with a recess adapted to receive the end of a flexible member, and a slidable closure member 011 the head of said body adapted to close a portion of the head recess and retain the endof the flexible member therein, said closure member having an opening corresponding in shape to the open end of the head recess and adapted to register therewith.
2. A pendant comprising a body having a spherical head provided wlth a recess adapted to receive the end of a flexible member, and a shiftable spherical shaped closure member fitted on the head of said body as a cover therefor and adapted to close a portion of the head recess and retain the end of the flexible member therein, and means in connection with said head adapted to retain said closure member in a closed position.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
