Application filed August 3, 1925. ser al No. 4?,741.
The present invention relates to improve ments in door hinges, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a hinge consisting of a plurality of leaves allowing a convenient raising of the door without the necessity of removing the pintles which frequently rust in and are hard to remove.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a door hinge equipped with means for holding the door open, if this is desired.
A further object of provision of a multiple-leaf door hinge of simple and inexpensive construction which may be easily fastened to any door, and is 5 especially well adapted to be applied to adjacent doors in which case one hinge is sufli cient for both doors.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a multi-leaf hinge, the pintle of which is spring-controlled for normal ly holding'the door lowered, but allowing a ready raising of the same if such is desired for instance when laying carpets or the like.
These and further advantages of my in known as the vention will become more fully description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of two adjoining doors equipped with a pair of hinges constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail front elevainvention.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 33 of Figure 2. The hinge comprises a central leaf 10 provided with a plurality of openings 11 bevelled, as it is-customary for the reception of the fastening screws 13 or the like.
The leaf 10 has two lateral wings or pintle sockets 13 and 14 for the passage of the pin- 7 tles 15 and 16 which also pass through the pintle sockets 17 and 18 at the lower ends of the inner faces of the lateral leaves 19 and 20 respectively sockets 21, 22, at the the leaves 19 and 20. have the customary upper heads 23 and 2 1, and screw holes 25 and 26. The inner lateral edges of the leaves 19 and 20 are cut away so as to form spaces 27 and 28 with the outer cut-away edges of the central leaf 10.
In these spaces spiral springs29 and 30 are wound about the pintles 15 and 16 restupper inner edges of the invention is, thetion of a multi-leaf hinge according to the and through similar, but smaller The pintles 15 and 16 7 ing with their lower ends upon collars 3i and'32 on the pintles which eachcarry a pin 33, and the upper ends of the springs 29 and 80 are hooked into perforations of eyes formed with the outer central leaf edges, as at 34 and 3,5.
The central leaf 10 carries on its upper part a knob 36 adapted to operate a latch 37 having its upper .end recessed as at 37 and 38 adapted to engage the pins 33 respectively on collars 31 and 32. The knob 36 is suitably spaced from thecentral leaf by a collar 89, and the construction of knob and its spindle is such that the latch 37 in its position of rest will be frictionally held in its upright position shown in Figure 2 but allow'a ready swinging of the latch into its pin engaging positions. e
-The operation of the device will be entire- 1y clear from the above description, if it is desired to raise a door, 't is simply necessary to lift the door in order to allow for instance the convenient laying of a carpet 40 and to lockthe door by the proper operation of the 30 latch. NVhen the work is done the door is allowedto slide down again and to form a tight seat on the carpet. If it is desired to keep a door temporarily open, the latch is engaged with pins 33 in the manner indicated in Figure 3. The springs will allow a convenient raising of the door for which the hinge leaves are suitably spaced to allow the proper motions, and the springs, will thenhold' the door again tightly closed.
It is to'be understood that while I have described and shown one form of my invention as an example, the hinge may be executed in many other ways and changes may be made in the construction of its minor details such as fall within the scope of the appended claims, without departure'from the spirit of my invention. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is as follows:
'1. Hinge comprising a central leaf member and lateral, auxiliary leaf members, integral pintles secured at upper and lower ends to one of said leaf members for hinged- 1y securing the lateral leaves to said central leaf at opposite edges thereof, springs wound about one part of said pintles and secured with their upper ends to said central member, collars on said pintles on which the lower ends of said springs rest, pins on said collars, and a latch movably secured to said central member and spaced therefrom at the inner upper and lower edges of said lateral wings, integral pintles passed through said sockets having upper heads, said pmtles being secured to one of said leaves to prevent movement of the latter relative to said pintlc, collars on said pintles within the upperspace between the central and lateral hinge members, pins on said collars, springs wound about said pintles within the said spaces, resting with their lower ends upon said collars, eyes formed on the outer upper edges oisaid central member to which the upper ends of said springs are secured, a latch, a knob for turning said latch about its spindle, means for spacing said latch from the central hinge member, and an upper head on said latch recessed on both sides for allowingan engagement of said recesses by said pins to lock the doors to which said hinges are secured in their open and raised position, and means-for securing; said hinge members to a door and to two adjacent doors having; a common jamb.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
