This invention relates to doors or windows, and more particularly to doors or windows that are hinged to swing about a vertical axis, and especially to so-called French doors or windows that areusually arranged to swing inwardly.
Generally stated, the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction whereby a door or window of this general character, which opens inwardly, is mounted to move downwardly, in a closed position, so that its lower edge will extend a distance below the window or'door sill, below a cleat on the window or door sill, thereby making the door or window weatherproof and water-tight, so to speak, at its lower edge, the door being movable upwardly a distance to permit it to swing inwardly over said cleat.
It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction and co1nbinations tending to increase the general eiiiciency and the desirability of swinging doors or windows of this particular character.
To the foregoing and other useful ends, the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is an inside view or elevation of a pair of French doors or windows involving the principles of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 in Fig.1;
Fig. 8 is a vertical section on line 8-8 in Fig. 7;
Fig. 9 is a perspective of one portion of said hinge; c
Fig. 10 isaperspective'of another portion," of said hinge; and y i Fig. 11 is a perspectiveof another: portion of said hinge.
As thus illustrated, the (ElOOIS:*OI' windows 1 andl-are hinged [to swinginwardly, being; attached to thedoor -or. window: frame 2 by the upper. hinges iiand the lowerhinges-i'zr There is clearance 5 atthe-upperedgeofeach" v door or window,- whereby eachrdoortorwirr- 6Q dow' when in closed position, mayrmove'a distance upwardly, in order thatthe lower-i edger 6 of the-door or window {may swingroventha cleat7, which: is-secured to thedoor orrwin u dow; sill8 in-themanner shown.- The'hinges; are constructed-to permit-1 thisaupward: dis placement of eacli'door or window, asrwillif hereinafter: more fully appear, and when iJllG-ClOOlSrOL windows-are initheirclosedpositions, as :shoWmin Fig. 3; ,theilower: edge is a'distanceb'elowi the top. This section 24 has a projection 28 which entersthe notches 19 andf23 tolockthe-door 0r:win= I dow in its lowered position. Also, the section 2 1 has a handle 29 for the operation thereof, and it will be seen that the pintle. 18 extends through the bearing portions and 20, therethe door or window into the position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. In this position, the door or window can be swung'inwardl over the cleat 7, as previously stated. hen the projection 27 engages the notch 22, the parts are temporarily held in the position shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, so that the door will not be liable to slip down when it is swung open.
7 Any suitable means canbe employedfor locking or latching the doors or windows in closed position. For example, an ordinary latching device 30 can be provided, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. V
When it is desired to shut the doors or windows, the two handles 29 are swung back into the drawings, after the doors or windows have been swung into closed position, thereby permitting each door or window to move down a distance into the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
What I claim as my invention is:

In a hinge for mounting a closure to swing about a vertical axis, and to rise verticallyto swing open about said axis, over a sill, hinge plates having interfitting knuckles provided with a vertical pintle and rotary means operative about said vertical axis to raise and lower the closure, said rotary means havinga locking element to lock the closure in its lowered position.
2. In a hinge for mounting a closure to swing about. a vertical axis, and to rise vertically to swing open about said axis, over a sill, hinge plates having interfitting knuckles provided with a vertical pintle and rotary means operative about said vertical axis to raise and lower the closure, said rotary means having swing about a vertical axis, and to rise vertically to swing open about said axis, over a Specification signed this 20th day of No vember 1929.
