THE GRAPHIC CCLPHOTO 'LITLSQ 8:41 PARK PLACIZJLYA /ffyz UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIC.
CHARLES H. BASS, OF MEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY CUPS AND-BALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 63,294, dated May 18, 1875; application. filed April 24, 1875.
Toall whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. BASS, of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Cup and Ball, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved cup and ball. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center of the same.V
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction otl the toy known as a cup and ball; and consists in providing the shank or handle of the cup with a spring-piston, which, when drawn down by the hand and suddenly released, will strike the under side ot' the ball and project it upward into the air, after which it may be caught in the cup in the ordinary manner.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it ont.
In the said drawings, Arepresents the cup, and B the shank or handle thereof, which is bored out longitudinally for the reception of a sliding rod, b, the upper portion of which is Surrounded by a spiral spring, o, which lits into a chamber, d, formed within the upper portion of the shank. The lower end of the spring c rests on the shoulder e, and its upper end bears against theunder side ot' a cylindrical tip or piston, f, of leather or other yielding or elastic material, which is firmly secured to the upper end of the rod b and is of such size that it will slide freely within the chamberd, its upper end projecting above the level of the bottom of the cup which contains the ball D, which is connected with the shank B by a cord, g, in the usual manner.
I prefer to make the tip f of elastic material, as the indentation of the ball is thereby prevented.
To the lower end of the rod b is secured a knob, E, by means of which it can be drawn down by the hand against the resistance of the spring c, the recoil of which, on its release, suddenly throws up the tip f, causing it to strike the underside of the ball D and project it up into the air, when it may be caught in the cup by a dextrous movement of the hand in a well-known manner.
I prefer to use the cord g, as it prevents the ball from falling to the ground, but-it may be dispensed with, if desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cup A, with its shank B, provided with a sliding rod or piston actuated by a spring for projecting the ball D from the cup, substantially as described.
Witness my hand this 20th day of April, A. D. 1875.
CHARLES H. BASS.
In presence of- P. E. TESGHEMACHEE, W. J. GAMBEIDGE.
