(ZANE TOY.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5 1915.
Application filed April 8, 1914. Serial No. 830,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS T. KEENAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cane Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and amusing cane toy, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which will be useful as well as amusing to the owner, and the same can be utilized as an ordinary cane when not being used as a toy.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be used for playing an entertaining game, which may be played by one or more persons.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numeral to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation of a cane toy made in accordance with my improvement, when being utilized as the ordinary cane. Fig. 2, is an enlarged vertical section of the upper end thereof; and Fig. 3, is a similar view of a slightly modified form of my in vention also illustrating the cap removed and the ball or marble in place ready for use.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied 2 represents the body of the cane preferably of wood having a ferrule or tip 3 on one end and provided at its other end with a threaded collar 4 in which is mounted the externally threaded end of the tube 5, said tube having a hole 6 therein to prevent the trapping of air between the lower closed end of said tube and the plunger. Within the tube is preferably mounted the plunger 7 which is normally forced upward or outward by the helical spring 8, one end of which rests against the body 2 of the cane, while the opposite end coacts with the inner end of the plunger. The outer end of the plunger 7 is provided with an extension or hammer 9, which is of smaller diameter than the plunger proper. The upper end of the tube 5 is also externally threaded and on this is mounted the head 10 comprising a neck 11 having a straight central bore 12 into which projects an annular flange 13 and a flaring or funnel 14. The upper edge of the flaring or funnel is exteriorly threaded as at 15, on which is adapted to be mounted the cap or cover 16 when the device is to be used as an ordinary cane, the plunger 7 being normally forced outward by the helical spring 8, the flange 13 will act as a stop to limit the outward movement of the plunger when the shoulder formed by the different sized circumferences of the plunger 7 and the extension 9 comes into contact with said flange.
l/Vhen the device is to be used as a toy the cap or cover 16 is removed, and a marble or ball 17 inserted in the funnel which will drop down and rest upon the extension 9 of the plunger.
By taking hold of the tube portion 5 of the cane the same may be given a quick upward movement which will cause the plunger to be forced inward against the action of the helical spring 8, and after reaching its full inward movement will be quickly forced outward by said spring, and this action with the continued upward action of the hand will cause the marble or ball to be shot out of the funnel with great speed and the player must then endeavor to catch the marble or ball in the funnel, which requires considerable accuracy and skill, thus producing an amusing entertainment. A number of persons may also play with the canes separately from one another, each player throwing it to another, and each of the other endeavoring to catch the marble when thrown toward them.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a slightly modified form of my invention in which the tube 5 is moved with a longitudinal slot 18, while the plunger 7 carries a small knob 19 which slides in said slot, and when so constructed the player using the device must pull the plunger back, by taking hold of the knob 19, and when said knob is freed the helical spring 8 will force the plunger 7 outward and shoot the ball 17 from the funnel.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is-
1. A cane toy comprising a body, a tube carried by the upper end thereof, a head mounted on the upper end of said tube, said head being provided with a flaring mouth or funnel, a cap adapted to be mounted upon the outer end of said flaring mouth, and a spring actuated plunger mounted within the tube.
2. A cane toy comprising a body, a tube carried by the upper end thereof, a head mounted on the upper end of said tube, said head being provided with a flaring mouth or funnel, a cap adapted to be mounted upon the outer end of said flaring mouth, a plunger mounted within said tube, an extension or hammer projecting therefrom, and a spring for normally forcing said plunger outward.
3 A cane toy comprising a body, a tube carried by the upper end thereof, a head mounted on the upper end of said tube. said head being provided with a flaring mouth or funnel, a cap adapted to be mounted upon the outer end of said flaring mouth, a
plunger mounted within said tube, an extension or hammer rojecting therefrom, a spring for normallv forcing said plunger outward, and means for limiting the out Ward movement of said plunger.
end, a spring for normally forcing said plunger outward, a knob carried by the plunger projecting through the slot, a head provided with a funnel carried by the upper end of the cane, and a cap adapted to be mounted u: on the outer end of the funnel.
6. In a device of the character stated a cane having a hollow upper end, a spring actuated plunger mounted therein, means for drawing said plungerback orinward, and a funnel adapted to receive a cap carried by the upper end of the cane.
7. As a new article of manufacture a cane having a hollow upner end and a funnel shaped mouth, a spring actuated plunger Within the hollow upper end and a cap adapted to close the mouth of the funnel.
8. In a device of the character stated a body provided with a top at one end and having a threaded collar mounted on the opposite end, a tube having a hole therein mounted in the collar, a plunger mounted in said tube, an extension of different diameter projecting from said plunger, a spring mounted between the upper end of the cane body and the lower end of the plunger for normally forcing the latter outward, a head comprising a neck and funnel mounted in the tube, an inwardly projecting flange formed with the neck and acting as a stop to limit the outward movement of the plunger and a cap for normally closing the outer end of the funnel.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto afiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS T. KEENAN.
