abovesaid: throat. yIt also consists inthe l parte` and. combinations of parts hereinafter described; and claimed IInU the accompanyingA drawing whereinv l like; numerals referlto like parts wherever thcy occur, l f 7 y K ig.. 1. is a perspective view of a shoe fitted with -a bootV top embodying my in `venti,on, the top portion. of. the boot top being shown unbuttoned and flaring open;
Fig. 2 is a similar view" with the upper portionf ofthe boot top rolled down;
3' is a similar view withthe front quarters of the boottop overlapping and buttoned together; and
Fig. 4 is a side view of the boot top alone.
My present boot top comprises quarters 5 whose lower edges are cut along the front portion to conform to the lines of a circular vamp shoe and along the back portionto conform to the heelv seat of the shoe S, the intermediate portion of said quarters being connected together by a strap 6 that is separate or integral therewith and adapted to pass under and conform to the shank of the shoe. The lower portion of the present boot top conforms more or less closely to the specification of my Patent No. 1,153,977. At or just above the throat, the quarters meet, substantially without overlapping; and at this point they are held together by any suitable detachable fastener, preferably by a short strap or tab 7 that is secured to one of the quarters (preferably the inside quarter) and whose free end is provided with a button hole 8 in a position to button over a `button 9 provided therefor' onv the other quarter or on a tabk secured thereto.
Below this strap, the inside quarter has a'fly 50 10 that overlaps the front edge of the outer quarter and is provided with button holes 11 in a Vposition to engage buttons 12 provided therefor on the outer quarter. Above the strap 7 the front edges of the quarters overlap, the overlapping increasing more and 1922. seriai No. 572,538.
more upwardly from the. strap,r and the inside quarteris provided with a button hole 13, 1nt position to button over a .button `14 provided `therefor near thetop of the outer quarter. `Above. the strap,l the` inner and c outerquarters, are substantially symmetrical g that .is, ,the upper front` portions 15.1ap. (equal distances beyond the vertical plane passingjthrough the front of the shoe.
In Aconsequence of' thek arrangements above described,"my bootrtop-y may be worn. in eitherof three positions. That is, iirst, it maybe worn after` the vmanner off a full length upperwith` the front quarters overlapping and secured together'. with the. button 1.4; second, it may vbe `worn kwith the quarters unfolded but with thev top portion unbuttoned and `flaring open; and third, it
may be worn with the. upper portionsv rolled downto the point fixed: by the throat strap 7. In order to enhance. the attractive appearance of the article, it is preferable to.
line it, for at least as far down as the throat strap, with a material of contrasting color or appearance from that of the outside.
Preferably my boot top is made of broad-. cloth orother similar fabric and obviously admits of numerous modifications without varying from my invention. For instance, it is unimportant Whether the button hole fly is integralV with the inside quarter or Vwhether it is made as a separate piece and stitched to said quarters. Likewise, it is unimportant whether they quarters are secured together by buttons andv button holes,` as illustrated in my Patent blo.` 1,368,771 or whether they are laced together as illus- `trated in my Patent No. 1,265,280. Like-V wise, the button strap may be replaced with any suitable device for detachably securing the quarters together just above the ankle, as for instance, lwith a metal buckle or with hook and eye or, in case of a laced boot top, the lace answers the purpose. Therefore I do not wish to be restricted to' the details hereinbefore described. y
While I have described myv invention as embodied in a boot top adapted to be worn over a. low shoe,.it is obviously capable of being embodied in a complete shoe and it is `so illustrated in the drawing.
wWhat I claim is: i
1. Anxarticle offootwear comprising an inside quarter andY an outside quarter, which are secured together along the back ofthe article and whose front edges substantially meet at the front line of said article near the throat thereof and are provided with means passing across said throat for detachably securing said quarters together, said inside quarter having an upper fly and a lower fly Awhich extend beyond said front line and are provided with means fordetachably secur ing them to said outside quarter.
2. An article of footwear comprising a high inside quarter and a high outside quarr .secured together along the back of said fticle, and means at the throat for detachably .securing said quarters together and independent means near the top for detachably securing them together, the front edge of said quarters meeting close to said throat and said quarters beingsubstantially symmetrical with relation to the front line of said article above said throat and adapted to overlap above said throat.
3. An article of footwear' comprising a high inside quarter and a high outside quarter secured together along the back of said article and whose front edges substantially moet near the throat, means at the throat for detachably securing said quarters together and independent means for detachably securing them together near the top, said quarters increasing in width above said throat and being substantially symmetrical with relation to the front line of .said article above said throat and adapted to overlap each other above said throat.
4. An article of footwear comprising a high inside quarter and a high outside quar ter secured together along the back of said article and means for detachably securing said quarters together across the throat and independent means for detachably securing them together near the top, the inside quarter increasing in width above and below said throat fastening and the outside quarter being substantially symmetrical with it above .said throatand said quarters being adapted to overlap each other above said throat, said article having an inside lining for its top portion which contrasts in color with the outside color of said article.
A boot top of the kind described comprising an inner flexible quarter and an outer iexihle quarter secured together along the back of said boot top and means located just above the` ankle for securing them togcther at the front without substantial overlapping just above the ankle, the portions of the inner quarter above and below said means overlapping the outer quarter to form .securing flies and beingprovided with detachable fasteners.
