JOHN L. GIESSLER, OF CLINTON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATE-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163, 1'79, dated May 11, 1875; application filed April 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. GrEssLER, of the city and county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Gate-Latch and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a view of latch applied to a gate 5 Fig. 2, an enlarged view of latch; Fig. 3, edge view of latch Fig. 4, detached view of catchplate.
The invention relates to farm and other gates, wherein the latch employed is often raised and the gate opened by a dumb animal, as well as by one of human kind. My object is to form such a latch as will require a degree of reasoning 'power beyond that of cow, dog, or horse; and consists in the double latch hereinafter fully described, and subsequently claimed.
A represents a gate, and B the frame in which it is preferably hinged, although it may be simply swung between two posts. 0 is a plate provided with two reversed and opposite catches, c c, in which fasten the latches D D. The latter are crooked, crossed, and pivoted at d, as well as provided with parallel handles al al The latchesDDare held apart and in the catches c c bya spring, E, arranged in the case F. The spring rests with each end in a groove, 6?, of the latches D D. They fasten with almost absolute certainty when the gate closes. No animal can possibly unlatch the gate, and yet, by compressin g the handles together, it is readily unlatched and opened by the hand of a human being.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination, with a gate and posts, of two crossed and pivoted latches, D D, having handles d d, the spring E, and the opposite catches a c, as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN L. GIESSLER.
