Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES S. MCSWAIN, OF POLE GROVE, WISOON SIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,384, dated January 5,1875; application filed Ju1y 20,1874. I
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES S. MOSWAiN, ot Pole Grove, in the county of Jackson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full specication of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature of my said improvements, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
My invention relates to that class of gates which are commonly termed farm-gates;77 and Vthe natureV thereof consists in certain lnodications and improvements in the details of the construction of the saine, as hereinafter Shown.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, which illustrate my invention and form a part of the specification thereof, Figure l is a 1ongitudinal elevation of the gate when closed. Fig. 2 is a reversed view of the same when open. Fig. 3 is a view of the gate with parts detached.
The construction and operation of my invention are as follows:
The gate (designated by letter A in the drawings referred to) is composed of two sec- Jrions, a. and c', the smaller of which, a', is so hinged to the larger that it may be opened independently thereof. The small gate is secured to the larger section by means of the bolts c, which are operated by the slotted 1evers d pivoted to the longitudinal bars, and also to the post E, by means of the bolt f, the rear end of which is provided with an aperture for the reception of a pin. The levers are connected together by a bolt passing through the slotted ends in such a manner that when the knobs e, which are secured to the ends of the said holt, are moved to the right the sections of the gate are secured together and locked to the post E. The said gate is secured to the post K by means of a bolt, g, passing through the vertical slot i cut in the same, and vertical sloth cut in the post ofthe said gate, in such a manner as to allow the said gate to be raised vertically to admit of the ingress or egress of swine, sheep, 85e., or to be rotated upon the said bolt until it occupies the vertical position clearly shown in Fig. 2. The said gate is rotated with ease through the assistance of the weighted bar o, and is held in position by the notched projection p, which iits over a bolt passing through and connecting the two upright sections of the said post.
Having described the construction and operation of my invention, I will state what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the following clausesthat is to say, I claimy l. The gate A, consisting of the sections a and c, the bolts c and f, slotted levers d, and knobs e, combined and operating together as described.
2. `'Ihe gate A, provided with the bolt f, notched projection p, and weighted bar o, and slot i, in combination with the upright post K, provided with a vertical slot, h, as and for the purposes described.
In witness whereof I have subscribed my name hereto this 6th day of May, 1872.
MOSES S. MGSWAIN. Witnesses:
I. B. ALLEN, M. A. ALLEN.
