My yinvention'relates to rulers, more parlticularly to desk rulers for ruling with pencils or writing pensyand provided withfiducial .ruling edges .for such purpose, themain object of my invention being to provide an improved instrument ofthis ycharacterI which will vembody certain desired features of simplicity, efliciency and convenience, and which will afford la practical, inexpensive advertisingmedium. L
An object of my invention Ais .to provide a' ruling instrument. characterized `by having means in the form .of replaceable inserts for y carrying advertisements, calendars, combinations thereof, or any printed or Written matter which it may be desired to discard and replace from time to time.
A further object of myinvention is to"pro vide a ruling instrumentin'y which the means vfor carrying thereplaceable inserts .willA also serve asmeans forholding the lidu'cial ruling edge Aso spaced .from the lpaper th'atlthe ink falling fromv a writing 'pen' will not ybe spread and Vblurred over .thefruledlines Another object lof my invention. is to y)provide a frame construction containingk the replaceable 'insert fea-tures and to lsoarrange the frame construction that it may ,be employed either as an attachment for the or-` dinary desk ruler'or as a cardholder capable offbeing attachedeto' a trunk, shipping ca se,
or the like. y l Other objects will appear hereinafter. rlhe invention ,consistsin the combinations and arrangements of parts'hereinafter described and Claimed.. f
The :invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and inv which,
Fig. l represents a top plan view of ya ruler constructed in accordance with my present invention;
Fig. 2 represents a View of a reverse face thereof;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectiontaken on the-line 3 3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Referrlng with more particularity toFigs.
.1 to 4, inclusive, wherein by way of examplekI have illustrated a preferred embodiment ofmy invention, the numeral l1.y designates sak body element made of L any suitableshe'et metal Aand provided with a''straightor rul-` fing edge 12 :withwhichupon the opposite :i:
faces [f :the body lelementfaare associated :hnear scales 1'3 .and 1.4-, respectively, A'sai-d. i scales .preferablyreading in lopposite ldirecl tions vand differing .fromeacli other in ,that
they Vcontain different arrangements `vof inches or Yfractional.parts thereof. :The side l5., opposite .the straight edge 12, ismade vWith-'an integralflangeA 16 which is bent `fiat- Wise over one face oflthe body element. `In
a similar manner the opposite-ends 17 are provided with integraly `ianges 18 which are 'bentiiatwise .over the same'lface of the bodv element. lBack a distance vfrom the vlinear scales, `integral flanges I19 are struck-from the stock and bent flatwise over the body7 element and toward the Hange- 16. The flanges, thus produced, are on the same face of the body element, and provide confronting channels 20 for the reception of a strip 21 which may have any suitable matter'- ends. are madewithintegralflanges 33 and i.
so that it may be readily applied or removed through ways or openings 24, preferably producedvby omitting the flanges for this purpose. By thisarrangement the :bendable strip 2l may be'removed and replaced from time to time.
According to another important feature of my present invention, the inturned flanges 16, 13 and 19, serve as rests for supporting the body element with the straight or ruling edge 12 raised from thepaper tofbe ruled; In view of this provision, an ordinary writing pen may be employed 'in connection with the straight edge 12 without spreading the ink and blurring the iuled lines.
In Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive,fI show a modified construction whichA is capable ofruse as an attachment for an ordinarydesk ruler 25. In this construction, the sides and ends `'of the body element 26 are made respectively Vwith inturned side and end flanges 27 and 28 so as to produce confronting grooves for theV reception and retention of a flexible strip 2,9. As in the previous form, the side flanges are interrupted to provide opposing ways 30 through which the advertising strip may be entered or removed. The body element 26 is provided with suitable openings 31 for the .reception of screw elements 32 ay which the bodyzelement may be secured in place upon the ruler 25.
AIn lFigs. 9 and l0 I show another modiication suit-able for use asA `an attachment.
In this embodiment, the construction vin- 35- cludesa frame 'composed of opposing sides 33 andV opposing ends 34, which sides and 134:', respectively, for retaining the advertising stripjyThe side flanges33 aresuitably linterrupted to provide opposing ways 35 throughl which the advertising strip may be `applied or removed` In this construction, the opposing sides 33 are connected by.
strengthening webs 36 in which are produced .the openings 37 for the `receptionf of the screw elements by which the attachment may Abe secured to the ruler. By making the de `vice/inthe form of an attachment, it is capable offbeing used not only in connectionV ing from the spirit of thel invention.

with a Common desk ruler but also in con# nection with a trunk or other carrying receptacle on which it may be desired to change the identification card from time to'time. v
. lhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention yinto effect, this isgcapable of variation and modification without depart- I therefore, do not wish to be limitedto the7 precise details'ofconstruction set forth, but
desire t0 avail myself of such variations and the scope of Having described my ,invention what'I 'claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patenti is 1.A A ruler constructioncomprising a body element having a ruling edge; and confronting flanges on said element varranged to hold an insert in place-thereon, one of said flanges being struck out of the body element'in- `metal bodyelement having a ruling edgeand linear scales on its opposite faces along said ruling edge; flanges bent from .the stock of A the; body element and jointly comprising means for holding an insert in place thereon;
`certain of said flanges being struck out of the stock inwardly of the linearscales on the yopposite faces of the body element, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I'have signed my name to this specification. j
