This invention relates to binders and more particularly to pads enabling proportional sketching thereon with facility7 although it niay be employed -with equal advantages for otl er purposes.
It contemplates incre especially the provision of a plurality of sheets bound in stacker relation in association with a scale Which is calibrateo` to readily enable sketches to be inade in the desired proportion Without resorting to a ruler or other standard measuring instrument.
Numerous forins of pads have heretofore been. proposed; however, these have not proven en iely satisfactory in that their use is restricted t the ordinary purposes which do not require resort to a ruler or like ineasuring` device.
r'illie production of /tchef contrivaiices necess f or i least renders it highly desirable to enable t e representation ther-coi' on paper so that the constituent parts thereof niay be proportional. t has been found that a ruler does not always prove expedient for such purpose in that sketches are ordinarily iiiade with niucli rapidity; therefore rulers are cumbersome, inconvenient and not conducive to the de sired speed.
lllith this iii vien', it is found highly desirable to provide calibrations and guiding means in associati i Wili n facilitate the proportional reproducti devices as Weil as to assist in the prei' ltration thereof With niuch. accuracy uithout requiring ruled sheets.
One object of the present invention is to simplify the construction and facilitate rapid proportional sketching.
Another object to provide ineans in association with a plurality of sheets to facilitate the attachment thereof to a flat surface to perniit slietclies to be readily inscribed. thereon.

A further object is the provision of a plurality of sheets arranged in stacked relation for secui'ance to a ineinber, so as to perniit the individual detachment thereof.
A still further Objectis the provision of a calibrated linear edge in association with a series of superposed sheets disposed in assoeiation therewith to enable proportional sketching thereon Without a ineasuring device.
@ther objects and advantages will be apparent frein the following description of an illustrated einbodinient of the present invention.:
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a device einbodying features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side View in elevation of the devicedisclosed in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan View of a ruled sheet which constitutes an elenient of the structure illustrated in Figure 1.
The structure selected for illustration coniprises a flat ineinber l() preferably of areotaiigular configuration, it being coniposed of any suitable material such as Wood or the like Which is capable of sustaining spaced posts 11 in proiziniity to an edge 12 thereof so as to facilitate the securance of a pad Of paper of other suitable Writing material thereto. The posts 11 preferably terminate in enlarged heads 13 Which are in threaded engagement with the shaiilts 11 so as to retain the sheets in association With the base 10 in a inaniier to be described inore fully hereinafter. f
The pad associated with the board 10 consists, in this instance, of a plurality of plain sheets of Writing paper let arranged in superposed stacked relation, they being bound along an edge 15 thereof by ineans of any suitable material suoli as a fabric strip 16 adhesively or otherwise applied thereto in As shown, the edges 15 of the sheet material 111A are maintained in aligned yposition by the adhering fabric 16 which terminates along a linear transverse line 17 disposed inwardly of the edges 15. The edge 17 has a suitable scale Ythereon ditions thereof to suit any particular purpose.
Obviously, such an arrangement permits Well proportioned sketches to be made on the sheets 14 With a great facility in the preparation thereof without resort to the ordinary ruler or straight edge Which can be dispensed with. This is highly desirable in that it requires much time and entails considerable inconvenience to manipulate a ruler, especially ivhere there is no accommodation as a table in the vicinity of the devices which are viewed for the purpose of making sketches thereof. To enable the sheets 14 to be ea ily detached, a linear perforation defining a line 1S is provided thereon in proximity and parallel to the linear edge 1T so as to enable the removal of the sheets 1a4 Wtih facility independent of the binding.
Obviously, sketchinpon the surface sheet 14 will doubtless result in undesirable impressions on the sheets disposed thereunder, and in avoidance thereof a sheet 19 of comparatively heavy texture is disposed on the board 10 for securance thereto near the loiver edge thereof by means of any suitable fastener such as the thumb tacks 20. rThe sheet is then disposed between the superposed sheets 1st preferably beneath the surface to preclude indentations occasioned by Writing thereon.
As shown, an edge Q1 of the sheet 19 is provided with perforations Q2 spaced to correspond ivith the binding posts 11 so as to cooperate therewith to maintain the sheet 19 in position. The sheets 1i are preferably of such thinness and text-ure that ruled crosssectional lines 23 inscribed on the sheet 19 may be viewed therethrough. It is to be noted that the cross-sectional lines 23 supplemented by the scale 18 enable sketches to be produced on the sheets 14 in any desired proportions, thereby facilitating accurate proportional reproductions for any desired purpose Without manipulation of a ruler.
lVith the arrangement of parts above described, the pad consisting of the sheets 14 is associated With the flat member 19 so that the apertures therein Will receive the posts 11, thereby maintaining the sheets 11i thereon owing to the binding caps 13 constituting a part of the posts 11. The ruled sheet 19 is then disposed betvveen the surface sheet let so that the perforations 22 in the edge thereof will cooperate with the posts 11 to prevent relative movement therebetween. rlhe sheets 1li are then capable of use for the purpose described therein, and subsequently thereto can be readily detached Without disturbing the binding posts 1G owing to the linear perforations 18 provided therein.
Various changes may be made in the emk bodiment of the invention herein specifically described Without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof as defined in the appended claims.
iVhat I claim is new and desire to procure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A device of the class described comprising a flat base member; spaced binding posts adjacent one side thereof; a pad of superposed sheets bound together at one edge, the opposite edges of said sheets being free, there being perforations through the bound edges to fit over said binding posts; and a ruled sheet of heavy material secured to said base adjacent the free edges of said sheets, insertable between said sheets and notched at its inserted edge to engage said binding posts.
