i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
vWILLIAM L. CALDWELL, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIs.
COMBINED BLOTTER, CALENDAR, AND RULE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,702, dated August 7, 1883, Application inea June 1o, 1882. (Modi-1,1' y
To all whom it .may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. CALDWELL, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Combined Calendar, Blotting-Pad, Paper-Cutter, and Rule; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention consists in a Combined calendar, blotting-pad, paper-cutter, and rule, constructed as hereinafter fully described and set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in book form, thrown open to show its interior. Fig. 2 is a view on a smaller scale Of the same when closed, showing its Calendar side or exterior.
The body of my device is in the form of a book provided with the opening cover A, which has on its inner side a card, F, attached at its upper and lower edges to said cover. The card F has printed directions on it for using the calendar. Through the center of the cover is a transverse opening, C, through which a portion of a card, E, may be exposed to view, said card being provided with different exhibits to perfect a perpetual calendar,
B D, on the outside of the lid. This perpetual calendar being the subject of another application for a patent, no further reference will be made to it.
TO form a blotting-pad, the under side of the book form is provided with a sheet of blotting-paper, G, whose edges d are drawn over the roll-shaped end G Of the body Of the implement, and secured by means of a springing holder, H, consisting of a simple elastic flat strip hooked at its outer end over the edge Of the lower portion, A', of the device, its body resting on the end d of the blotter, and its inner end slipped under or within the bound or closedV edge portion of the book-like portion of the device. In order to turn or replace the blotting-paper G the holder H must be withdrawn.
I represents a rigid strip of metal or other material, extending the full length of the device for the purpose Of stiffening it and preserving it in a plane form. The outer edge of this strip extends beyond the back Of the book form, and is beveled or sharpened t'O be used as a paper-cutter. This strip I is divided into inches and fractions thereof by short cross-lines on its face, near the edge, thus forming a measuring-rule, convenient for occasional use, and the edge, being straight, may be used for a rule by which to draw lines. The edge being some distance above the back face, which would rest on the paper, makes it especially safe against blotting when used in lining with a common pen.
Within the book form a silicate or slate tablet, J, is secured to the back A for memorandum purposes. The iiy -leaves of paper K may also be similarly used.
Some of the advantages of this implement are that it combines four distinct and useful implements for office use in one piece, thus increasing its convenience over the single parts composing it, and it saves much time in hunting up either of the pieces wanted, for they are always together.
I am aware that most of the single features of this device are not individually new, and I do not claim the same.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The body A', having the stiffener I at its back edge, provided with an edge to serve as a paper-cutter, and graduated as a measuringrule, in combination with the cover A, hinged at the inner edge of said stifener to said body, like a book, provided with an opening exposing a calendar-card, E, an inner card, F, covering-said opening and holding cardEinplace,
and a tablet, J, secured to the body, substan- K tially as specified, whereby these Office implements are kept together convenient for use.
,2. The body A', having a stiffener at its back combining a rule-measure and paper-cutter, a cover, A, hinged to the body at the inner edge of the stiffener, one Or more fly-leaves, K, bound in at the back, like a book, and a blotter, G, on the under side of the body, in combination with the strips H, each formed into a hook at one end and inserted at the other end into the back binding of the book form to hold the ends Of the blotter, substantially as specified.
