HAND-BAG ACCESSORY.

Application led `October 9, 1926. Serial No. 140,447.

This invention relates to a handbag accessory, and has for its primary object to provide simple and easily and quickly applied means for att-aching a mirror or other accessory to a ladys handbag.

The invention has for a more particular i object to provide a simple and novel attaching means for such handbag accessories adapted to be assembled with one of' the frame members of the bag and which is of such construction that it may be securely fixed and held in connected relation with such frame member Without necessitating the provision of additional fasteningor securing devices, such as rivets or thevlilre.

It is a further general object of the invention to provide a device of the above character which is highly convenient and serviceable in practical use and will not materially add to the manufacturing or selling cost of the article. x

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved handbag accessory and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of its several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described,

illustrated in the accompanying drawing,

and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.

Referring in detail to the drawings, we have therein shown our present improvements applied to a conventional type of ladies handbag generally indicated at 5 which may be constructed of any desired materials or of any preferred size and shape.

The flexible body of the bag is secured to thecustomary U-shaped frame members 6 which are hingedly connected with each other at their ends by suitable grommets or eyelets 7. As clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, each of these frame members is of channel shape form in cross section and to the central portions thereof, a suitable latch means is attached to hold the two frame members in closed abutting engagement against each other. The manually operable part 8 of this latch means is carried by one of said frame members while a relatively iixed stud 9 of suitable form is secured to the other frame member, said stud having a shank disposed through an opening in the intermediate portion of said frame member and terminating in a head 10 positioned between the opposed side walls-of the frame member.

For purposes of illustration, we have herein shown our improved accessory attachment as embodying a U-shaped frame member 11 formed of acont-inuousstrip of sheet metal of channel shape in cross section and constituting-a holder lfor a mirror indicated at 12. This mirror is mounted upon one side of a' stiff or rigid base 13 faced with leather or other suitable decorative material shown at 14. The edges of this base for the mirror are engagedl within the channel of the frame member 11.

The member 11 terminates at its opposite ends in longitudinally projecting apertured ears 15 which are adapted to be hingedly or pivotally connected with similar apertured ears 16 projecting at right angles to the plaiie'of a metal strip 17, said connection consisting of metal eyelets or grommets 18 similar to the pivot connections 7 between the bag frame members 6.

This strip is adjusted until the head 10 of the stud 9 which will is positioned in the recess 20 of said strip. Such side walls of the frame member are then tightly clinched together whereby the metal strip 20 and the edge of the bag wall will be securely confined in the channel and held in connection with the bag frame. It wlll he evident that the head 10 of the catch lug 9 etl'ectually prevents any longitudinal shifting movement of the metal attaching strip 1T with respect to the bag frame. 'lhe ears 16 projecting outwardly from opposite ends ot' this strip normally support the f rame 11 in a pendant position with thelnlrror. 12 supported by said frame engagedagainst the side .wall ot' the bag 5. lVhen 1t is desired to use the mirror, it is only necessary to swing said frame 1l upwardly, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings and after such use, it will again swing downwardly to the pendant position against the bag wall so that the mirror is protected against accumulations of dust upon the surface thereof.

While we have referred to a particular form ot the frame 11 and to the bag accessory as consisting of the mirror 12 mounted in said frame, it will be understood that th1s is not essential, and other toilet accessories might be connected with the attaching strip 17 .i Thus, for instance, on bags of the larger sizes, a mirror might be connected with one end of the metal strip 17 while a small vanity case could be similarly connectedwith the opposite end of said strip. It will be seen that this metal attaching strip can be very easily and quickly applied and securely fixed in position in connection with the bag frame member, in the same operation whereby the side wall of the bag is attached to said frame member, and' that no screws, rivets or other additional fastening elements i'or said attaching strip are necessary. However, it will be apparent that in the various applications of our present improvements which are possible, more or les's modication in the form, proportion and relative arrangement of the detail mechanical parts ma be found desirable. Accordin ly, it is to e understood that we reserve t e privilege of embodying the essential features of our present disclosure in numerous other alternative forms which may be fairly incorporated within the spirit and scope of the invention as' claimed.

We claim:

1. In combination with a handbag having a t'iexible body and a channe'lled member, a metal attaching strip adapted to be arranged in the channel of said frame mem ber at the outer side of the edge of the flexible body-wall positioned therein and the side walls of said frame member clinched upon said metal strip and body wall to confine the same in connection therewith, and an accessory holder connected with said metal strip and normally depending therefrom exteriorly of the bag,

In combination with a handbag having a iexible body and a channelled frame member, a metal attaching strip adapted to be arranged in the channel of said frame member at the outer side of the edge of the flexible body wall positioned therein and the side walls of said frame member clinched upon said metal strip and body wall to confine the same in connection therewith, and an accessory holding frame hingedlyv connected with the opposite ends of said metal strip and normally supported thereby in a pendant position exteriorly of the bag.

3. In combination with a handbag having a iiexilole body and a channel shaped frame member, a metal strip adapted to be positioned in the channel of said frame member at the outer side of the body wall and the sidewalls of said frame member clinched upon said strip and body wall to confine the same in connection therewith, said frame member and said metal strip having coacting means preventing longitudinal shifting movement of said strip, and an ac-V cessory holder hingedly connected with said strip and normally supported in a pendant position exteriorly of the bag.

4. In combination with a handbag having a flexible body and a channel shaped frame member, a metal strip adapted to be positioned in the channel of said frame member at the outer side of the body Wall and the side walls of said frame member clinched upon said strip and body Wall to confine the same in connection therewith, said metal strip having an angularly rojecting flange on one longitudinal edge t ereof and provided centrally thereof with a recess, and said frame member having a stud projecting into the channel thereof and adapted to engage in said recess to prevent longitudinal shifting movement of said strip, and an accessory holder hingedly connected with said strip and normally supported in a pendant position exteriorly of the bag.
