1 Claim.

The object of this invention is to provide a hand bag such as for instance, which has no outer or main frame, with an inner pocket not formed or incorporated in the material of which the hand bag is made, usually cloth, leather or the like, as has been heretofore common, the inner pocket being preferably centrally located in the bag and provided with a pair of frame members having fastening means for securing the frame members in locked position, thereby locking the pocket. The frame is provided with suitable means, such as a pair of pivots which are mounted in brackets, the brackets being secured to the ends of the bag or the gussets formed in the fabric of the bag, in order to maintain or support the pocket in a central position in the bag.

These and other advantageous objects, whic will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:

Fig. 3 represents a detailed view of a modified form of my invention, and

Figs. 4 and 5 represent fragmentary perspective views of other modified forms of my invention.

As shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, the invention relates to hand bags of the type which has no rigid outer or main frame, and which is generally designated in the hand bag trade as a frameless hand bag, such as the hand bag l-I shown in Fig. 1, the hand bag being usually provided with a zipperor other suitable closure A. The invention consists in providing such a hang bag with an inner pocket 2 not formed or incorporated in the material of which the hand bag is made, usually cloth, leather or other suit-- able fabric, as has been heretofore common, the inner pocket 2 being preferably provided with a pair of frame members I of any desired or convenient shape, preferably provided with the customary latching members, the frame members i being hingedly connected at their lower ends 4, as may be clearly seen from Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ends t of the frame members i are provided with pivot pins 5 secured thereto by riveting or in any other desired or convenient manner, the outer ends 6 of the pivot pins 5 being passed through the lips I of the channelled brackets 8 and being secured thereto in any desired or convenient manner, as 5 by riveting or the like,

The brackets 8 are clamped over the oppositely disposed ends or gussets 9 of the bag to maintain or support the pocket 2 in a central position in the bag, as may be clearly seen from Figs. 1 and 2 10 of the drawing. To provide further means for clamping the brackets 8 to the material of the gussets 9, the brackets are preferably provided with struck-up prongs Hi adapted to pass through the gusset material when the brackets 8 are 15 clamped thereto (see Fig. 2).

If desired, the outer ends 6 of the pivot pins 5 may be directly secured to the gussets 9, as shown in Fig. 3. In this form of my invention, the outer end 6 of each pivot pin 5 is reduced and is passed 20 through the material of the gusset 9, washers l2 being positioned in the reduced portions of the pivot pin on both sides of the gusset to reenforce the gusset adjacent the aperture in the gusset through which the pivot pin passes, the reduced 25 end 6 of the pivot pin 5 being preferably made hollow as shown in Fig. 3 and being upset to provide a head l3 bearing against the washer l2 at the outside of the gusset and thus securely positioning the pivot pin 5 in the gusset 9. 30

In some cases, it may be found desirable to removably secure the inner pocket 2 in the hand bag. For this purpose an arrangement such as shown in Fig. 4 may be used wherein the outer ends of the pivot pins are provided with bulbous 35 heads l4, and the gussets 9 are provided with spring sockets l5 into which the bulbous heads [4 of the pins may be snapped and resiliently held. To remove the inner pocket from the bag it is merely necessary to withdraw the bulbous heads 40 I4 manually from the spring sockets l5 in which they are resiliently held.

As the frame members I of the inner pocket 2 are secured to the oppositely disposed gussets 0f the hand bag, the structure lends rigidity to the 45 bag and maintains the shape thereof.

To further provide these advantageous features, the outer ends 4 of the frame members I may be directly connected to the inturned ends ll of the arms I! of a continuous strip 18, which 50 may be of flat, circular, or any other desired cross-section, and which is positioned in the bottom of the bag, as shown in Fig. 5. The inturned ends ll of the arms I! of the strip l8 are secured to the gussets 9 of the hand bag by 55 any suitable means, such as by the brackets 8 to which the arms I! of strip l8 may be secured in any desired or convenient manner as by soldering, welding or the like.

The configuration and dimensions of the various parts described may be varied to conform to various requirements within the scope of my invention.

If desired, the lower end of the inner pocket 2 may be secured to the bottom of the hand bag H at one or more points (not shown) and the strip I8 shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing may be sewed or otherwise secured to the hand bag material (not shown).

The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

In a irameless hand bag, an inner pocket, a strip positioned in the bottom of the hand bag for reenforcing the bag and maintaining the shape thereof, said strip being provided with pivoting arms for the inner pocket, said arms being secured to said pocket, and means for securing the arms of said strip to the oppositely disposed ends or gussets of the hand bag.
