VANITY CASE.

Application filed. February 9, 1922. Serial No. 535,257.

Be it known that T, GEoRon C. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vanity Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vanitycases, and pertains more particularly to a vanity case which is designed for attachment to a garter.

The primary object of the invention is to provide means'for detachably securing a vanity case to a garter, so that the case can be easily and. quickly detached from the garter without removal of the latter, and to also allow the case to be, reattached to the garter while the latter remains in position on the wearer. A further object of the invention is to provide means of a novel, simple and economicalconstruction for securing the case to the garter.

The invention further resides in the novel construction and combination of parts to be now fully described and later claimed. and still further and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.

Tn proceeding irT accordance with the present invention a case is employed having a body 1 and a lid 2 hinged to the body as indicated at 3. The rear side of the body is provided with a stud 3, which is rigidly secured thereto in any desired manner. At a point on the rim of the body diametrically opposite the stud, and adjacent to the hinge connection 3, a slot 4: is cut for the reception of the [Ll-shaped end 5 of arm 5 the latter carried by the spring fastening member 6. The arm 5 and end 5 are formed by merely bending the member 6, the end 5 being of a size to be received in the slot 4: and to embrace the part of the rim adj aoent to the slot on both the inner and outer faces of the rim. A rivet or fastening pin 7 is employed nd which is drlven through perforations provided therefor in the parallel parts of the arm 5 and the rim, and is headed into engagement with said parallel parts of the U-shaped end of the arm 5. The arm 5, it will be seen, extends at right angles to the body of the fastening member 6 so that the latter is held at a spaced distance "from the rear face of the body of the case to receive the garter G in such space. It will further be seen that the ll-shaped end 5 is so located as to not interfere with the free hinging movements of the lid of the case. The opposite end of the fastening member 6 is slotted as indicated at 8 in order to snap or spring over the head of the stud 3. The member 6 is preferably of open formation, so that the slot 8 constitutes a mere contracted extension of the opening, the purpose of the latter being to allow parts of the garter to enter into the opening of the member 6 to thereby assist in retaining the case in position on the garter.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the upper edge of the garter engages the arm 5 so that the case is thereby held against downward movement, the opposite or free end of the member 6 projecting slightly below the case so that same can be easily gripped by the fingers and pressed rearwardly to be disengaged from the stud, whereupon the case can be simply lifted upwardly and disengaged from the garter. To reattach the case to the garter, it is simply necessary to move the case downwardly with the member 6 on the rear side of the garter, whereupon the member may be snapped into engagement with the stud 3'.

It is thus not necessary to remove the garter in attaching or detaching the case, and due to the resilient nature of the memher 6 and the attachment of same by its right angular arm, no pivotal means is required, and the member is restricted in its outward movement from the case, or in other words simply has sufficient movement to allow the garter to be received between the member and the case.

It will further be seen that but few operations are required in order to apply the intil vention to. a vanity case, namely the forma-' tion of the slot to receive the U-shaped end 5, the securement-of the stud 3, and the fastening of the pin or rivet 7,

In combination with a garter, a vanity case having a stud and having a cut-out in its rim, an open fastening member having a contracted slot at one end to snap over the head-of the stud, and having its 0 posite end extending at right angles and ormed with a U-shaped part, which latter extends through the cut-out and embraces both faces of the rim adjacent to the cut-out, and a rivet extending through both sides of the U-shaped part'and throu hthe rim, said right-angular end of the asteningmember holding the latter spaced from the case so as to receive the garter in'such space, the free end of the member extending beyond the adjacent part of the case, and the garter being engaged between the stud and by the right angular end of the member;

In combination witha garter, a vanity case, a member disposed transversely of the garter and connected at its upperend to the rear of the case, and means to detachably connect the lower end of the member to the case at points adjacent the lower side of the garter, said member being formed of relatively stiff material to allow same to be inserted between the rear of the garter and the limb of the wearer and then moved downwardly to enable the lower side of the member to be connected to the case, and being of straight and flat formation with its opposite side faces free so as ,to lie flat against the limb ofthe wearer and approximately parallel to the rear face of the case when in operative position.

In combination with a garter, a vanity case, having a stud, a fastening member having a right angular end riveted to the case and formed to engage the stud, the garter being'engaged between the member and case and between the stud andthe right angular end of the member, said member being formed fiat to lie fiat against the limb of the wearer.

4. In combination with a garter, a vanity case, a member disposed transversely of the garter and connected at its upper end to the rear of the case, and means to detachably connect the lower end of the member to the case at points adjacent the 'lower side of the garter. said member being formed of relatively stifl' material to allow same to be 1nserted between the rear of the garter and the limb of the wearer and then moved downwardly to enable the lower side of the member to be connected to the case, the member having an elongated opening to afford an open-formation permitting a part of the garter to be received in the opening, to assist in holding the case in position, and being formed with a flat rear face to lie fiat against the limb of the wearer.

5.
