Description

Dec. 14, 19 37. J. T. RAKAUSKAS SPECTACLE CASE Filed Dec. 31, 1936 Patented D... 14, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT 'OF'FIC James: T. Itakauskas, Chicago, Ill. I Application December SH, 1936, Serial No. 118,654 I 4 Claims.
My invention relates to spectacle cases, and more particularly to clips for attaching the same to apocket, belt, dress fold or other garment, and my main object is to' provide a clip which 5 has a simple connection with the spectacle case.
A. further object of the invention is to so con- Another object of the invention is to combine the clip and spectaclecase in a manner to pre- ,sent a neat and inconspicuous appearance.
An important object of the invention is to make the connection of the clip to the spectacle case so economical to produce that no appreciable increase will result in the manufacturing cost of the article.
With the above objects in=view, and any others which may suggest themselves from the description to follow; a better understanding of the invention may be gained by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1' is an elevation showing the improved spectacle case'secured to a garment pocket;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the improved spectacle case;
0- Fig. 3 is a more enlarged view of so much of the inner side of the spectacle case, as deals with the clip; 1
Fig. 4 is a vertical section in the zone of the clip, showing its application to the spectacle case cover; and
Fig. ,5 is a .view similar to Fig. 4, showing two steps in the seeming of the clip to the said cover. I have found that a clip attached to a spectacle case is, a handy means to'secure the sameto the 40 pocket or other portion of a garment in order to prevent, .the dropping of the spectacle case to the, floor when its owner takesga bending or ,stoopiug' movement. A spectacle case'so improved is shown in the prior patent art, but its apparent absence -from the market may be due- I to the fact that the method of attaching; the clip is too costly or that the device is inefiicient in I use' I have therefore devised a spectacle case which eliminates these disadvantages.
In accordance with the foregoing, specific referenc tothe, drawing shows :aponventionai spec.-v tacle at II and its covergat-ILy Spectacle- .casesf are usually stamped from steel L and I are -either' embossed or wrapped with a fabric ore v Q 2. The structure of claim 1, said extension The pocket clip 02 is applicable to the cover it as shown in Fig. 2, the shank iii of the clip being slightly ofiset and passing through a horizontal slot lla in the cover and extending up wardly behind the cover as shown in Figs. 3 and 5 4. In the novel embodiment I extend the spectacle case cover I l with a tongue MD in an upward direction and bend the same down inwardly, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, to overlie the upper end. of the clip shank E3. The tongue is then made firm'in a press, so as to permanently secure the clip to the spectacle case cover.
It will be understood that the above operation applies/either to the plain or covered cases, as the case cover may beformed with the perfora- 15 tion Ma and the extended tongue lib in either event. Also, when the clip has been secured as described, its shank will be designed to depart from the point fastened so as to extend in slightly spaced relation from the inner side of the case cover. The clip being made of spring metal, it is seen that this expedient permits it to flex along its entire length when outwardly tensioned by the application of the clip to a pocket..
It is evident from the above description that the improved spectacle case has an integral fastener for the clip, eliminating the need of screws, rivets or soldering. Further, the clip is rigidly secured only at its upper end so as to be free to flex and. move relative to the opening liq. when it is tensioned in an outward direction, being thus rendered more flexible and serviceable for a much longer period than a clip having only a. portion flexible. Further, the improve- 5 ment is ordinarily invisible. from the outside so that only the clip is seen, the fastening orany suggestion thereof not being evident. Finally, it is easily apparent that the improvement enables the spectacle case to be manufactured very eco- 40 v nomically for the-application of the clip, so as not to appreciably increase the manufacturing cost due to the same.
I claim:-'- i v l. A combined spectacle case and pocket clip therefor, said case being formed to provide a substantially horizontal slot therein adjacent an upper edge portion thereon,- an integral extension of said edge ofsaid case above said slot, said clip-including a shank extending through said slot and upwardly towards said edge along the,- inside of said case." said extension engaging the free end of said shank and to fasten said clip to said: case.
2 momma v overlying the free end oi'said and press-' gaged with said adjacent of said ing the same against the inside 01' said case to to attach said clip to saidcase.
accomplish its engagement with said shank. 4. A combined spectacle ease and pocket clip 3. A combined spectacle case and pocket clip therefor, saidclip comprising a clip portion cartheretor, said case being formed to provide a slot ried outwardly of said case andan integral shank therein, an extension of said case adjacent said carried inwardly of said case, an integral extenslot, said clip-including a shank, said shank being sion of said case, said extension being engaged extended through said slot with a portion thereof with said shank to attach said clip to said case. adjacent said extension, said extension being en- 7 JAMES '1.
