MECHANICAL TOY.
Application filed November This invention relates to mechanical toys of the kind in which movable means or 1nstruinentalities are provided on a Wheeled body, in combination with operating means, whereby the movable means or instrumentalities will be actuated in the desired manner when the toy is pulled or propelled along the floor.
Generally stated, the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction whereby one or more knockers are provided on a wheeled base or body, in combination with operating means, operated by one or more of the wheels of the body, and in combination with means to be engaged by said knocker or knockers, thereby to produce a drumming noise or effect, so to speak, when the toy is pulled or propelled along the floor.
To the foregoing and other useful ends, the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a plan of a mechanical toy embodying the principles of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of said toy, on line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a sheet-metal body 1 having inclined and oppositely disposed surfaces 2 facing forwardly and rearwardly. Wheels 3 of any suitable character are provided to support the body. An axle having cranks a is provided for the wheels 3 at one end of the toy, preferably at the rear end. At about the middle of the toy, a transverse cylindrical support 5 is provided below the horizontal wall 6 of the body. Rods 7 extend downwardly through slots 8 in the'wall 6, and are bent around the member 5, m the manner shown. The upper ends of these rods have balls 8 thereon to engage the surfaces 2 previously mentioned. The lower end portions 9 of the rods are connected by pitmen 10 with the cranks 4 previously mentioned. Any suitable means can be employed for propelling the toy along the floor, such as the cord 11 hitched to the front end of the toy. Thus, when the toy is pulled along the floor, the cranks 4 will actuate the pitmen 10 and thereby vibrate the rod 7 back 9, 1925. Serial No. 67,816.
and forth, causing the balls 8 to hit first one surface 2 and then the other, and thus produce a pounding or drumming noise. As shown, two knockers 8 are employed, producing the knocking or drumming noise, but it is obvious that any suitable or desired number of knockers can be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Without disclaiming anything, and without prejudice to any novelty disclosed, what I claim as my invention is:
1. In a mechanical toy, the combination of a wheeled body, a knocker operative to vibrate back and forth, front and rear portions of said body constructed and disposed in position to form opposite stops to receive the impacts of said knocker to produce a pounding or knocking sound, and wheeloperated means for actuating said knocker from one stop to the other when the toy is propelled along the floor.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1, said body comprising an inclined surface upon which the knocker engages, at one end of the toy, and an oppositely inclined surface at the other end of the toy, forming said stops, the knocker vibrating between the two surfaces, and alternately engaging with resounding impacts first One and then the other.
3. A structure specified in claim 1, there being a plurality of said knockers, and said body having oppositely disposed surfaces be tween which the knockers are disposed, ifolfllllllg said stops, so that each knocker eugages with recounding impacts first one surface and then the other.
at. A structure as specified in claim 1. said knocker comprising a rod pivoted to vibrate about a transverse axis disposed substan tially at the middle of the toy, so that the knocker swings between the front and rear end; of the toy, the said body having oppositely disposed surfaces between which the knocker operates forming said stops, and said means for operating the knocker comprising a crank axle connected by a pitman to the lower end of the rod.
Specification signed this 5th day of Nov.
