Be it known that I, J ESSE L. SNEED, a citi-. zen of the vUnited States, and resident of Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
.This invention relates to animated toys Objects of this invention are to provide an animated traveling toy which is-selfpropelled, which is provided with a pair of gures arranged in tandem to-simulate an active chase, and to provide mechanism for imparting individual characteristic motion 'to said figures when said toy travels across the floor.
Further objects are to provide a toy in which simple mechanism, which may be 'cheaplylproduced, is provided for imparting an alternate twisting motion to the head of a figureand simultaneously actuating the members of such figure to simulate running, and to provide means cooperating with another of such figures to impart movement to certain. portions thereof simulating an attempt at catching the first figure.
Further objects are to provide an animated toy which is compact, which may be cheaply produced and in which there is a minimum number of parts. 7 I
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:-

The toy comprises a hollow body portion 1 which may be readily constructed from pressed sheet metal. This body portion is provided. with forward and rear wheels 2 and- 3, respectively, which are carried bv forward and rear transverse shafts 4 and 5 mounted in such body portion. The forward shaft 4 is provided with a inion 6 driven from spring mechanism indicated generally at 7 and provided with a laterall disposed winding key 8. The forward sha 4 is proarranged axially spaced projections 9 -and10 for a purpose hereinafter to appear. ,-;;Upon the u per side of the body .portion '1 adjacent the front thereof, a. stationary sleeve 11 is provided and a vertical spindle 12 is loosely carried and supported by such sleeve. The upper 'end of the sleeve carries aforked member 13 which supports the body portion or torso 14 of the forward animated figure, such figure being in the specific illustration, that of a man." The body portion is provided with downwardly opening slots 15 within which are, ivotally mounted the upper portions 16 of t e legs of the figure,the legs and arms of such figure being conveniently made from sheet metal; The lower portions 17 of the legs are pivotally and loosely joined 'to the upper portions, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3. supported from the upper end of the figure and hang down outside of the outline of the body portion and of the legs, as shown in Figure 3. The head 19 of such figure is rigidly attached to the vertical spindle 12. It is to be noted that intermediate the ends of the spindle oppositely extending rods 20 are provided and are rigidly carried thereby- The outer portion of these rods extend through holes 21 formed in the upper leg portions 16, as shown in Figure 1. The forward figure may be readily actuated by providing a cam member 22 having slanting sides 23 and attaching such, cam member rigidly to the lower end of the vertical spindle 12. It will be seen that as the shaft 4 rot-ates, the projecting lugs 19 will strike the faces 23 of the cam member and rock the s indle back and forth through a portion of t e turn, thus causing the head to rock from side to side and making the figure appear as if it were looking over its shoulder at the .pursuing figure. As the spindle 12 oscillates,
the rods 20 will impart rocking motion to the legs to simulate running, and it is to be noted that the outermost portion of the rods project beyond the arms 18 of such figure and will at times strike such arms and cause them to violently swing, thus further simulating active running.

I claim: g 1. An animated toy comprising a body portion, wheels supporting said body portion, spring mechanism for rotating said 'wheels, a vertical sleeve carried adjacent the front of said body portion, a vertical spindle loosely projecting through said sleeve, means for oscillating said spindle from said driving mechanism, a figure having its. torso supported from said sleeve and having pendant legs pivotally joined to such torso and means 'operatively connecting said legs and said spindle.
2. An animated toy comprising a body portion, spring mechanism carried thereby, a pluralit of supporting wheels certain of said whees being driven from said spring mechanism, a vertical spindle carried adjacent the front of said body portion, a figure having its torso supported fromsaid body portion and having pendant pivotally attached legs provided with apertures therethrough, arms projecting laterally and carried by said spindle and loosely projecting through said apertures, and means for oscillating said'spindle from said spring mechanism.

An animated toy comprising a box-like body porthm, a plurality of wheels supporting such body portion, said wheels having transverse shafts, spring mechanism for rotating one of said shafts, a pair of lugs ber a jacent said lugs and adapted to be alternately struck by said lugs when said shaft rotates, a figure having its torso carried. by said sleeve and having legs pivotally joined thereto and provided with'apertures, arms projecting outwardly from said spindle and loosely projecting through said apertures, said spindle extending through I said torso, and a head carried by the upper end of said spindle.
4. An animated toy comprising a box-like body portion, a plurality of wheels supporting such body portion, said wheels having transverse shafts, spring mechanism for rotating one of said shafts, a pair of lugs projecting from opposite sides of said shaft and axially spaced along said shaft, a sleeve projecting upwardlyfrom said body portion, a vertical spindle extending through said sleeve and having a cam member adjacent said lugs and adapted to be alternately struck by said lugs when said shaft rotates, a figure having its torso carried by said sleeve and having legs pivotally joined thereto and provided with apertures, arms projecting outwardly from said spindle arid loosely projecting through said apertures, said spindle extending through said torso, a head. carried by the upper end of said spindle, and a second figure carried by said body portion rearwardl of said first figure, and having a movab e portion actuated from the rear of said shafts.
