TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J n 20 1922 Application filed March 9, 1920. Serial No. 364,453.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAE R. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys, and comprehends the provision of a foot operated wheeled toy designed to represent a tank, the latter being equipped with a gun, and means for producing a clicking sound to represent the sounding of the gun, also providing a signal for the toy.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the toy constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail view taken on the line 55 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates generally the body of the toy, which is designed to represent a tank of the well known construction used during the recent war. The sides of the tank are indicated at 10 and are flanged as at 11, the sides being connected b the end members 12. The bed is indicate at 13 and supports a seat 14 for the user. The space between the seat proper and the bed 13 defines a compartment wherein articles of suitable size may be conveniently carried in the toy access to this compartment being controlled by means of a door 16. The end members terminate in spaced relation at the top of the tank and provides for an entrance to the toy. The toy is supported on wheels, the front wheels being indicated at 17 and mounted on suitable axles 18, while the driving wheels 20 are associated with the axle 21. V The latter mentioned axle is provided with oppositely disposed crank portions 22 each of which has associated therewith one end of a pitman 28, the forward corresponding extremities of these pitmen being movably associated or connected with the bed 13. The pitmen support pedals 25 by means of which the pitmen are actuated by the feet of the user in order to rotate the rear axle 20 that propels the toy over the ground or surface.
Carried by one of the end members adjacent the top thereof is a member indicative of a gun, the member being shown at 26. Carried by the rear end of the this gun, is a leaf spring 27 A shaft 28 is journalled for rotation in the manner shown and is operated by means of'a handle 29. Radiating from the shaft 28 is a plurality of blades 30 which are successively brought into contact with the spring 27 to produce a clicking noise, indicative of the firingofthe gun. In addition to being used for this purpose, this mechanism is used as a signal for the toy. The component parts of the toy, may be constructed from wood, metal or anyv other suitable material, and the toy in its entirety varying in size without departing from the spirit of the invention.
While I have shown and described what I consider the preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself in this connection, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is A wheeled toy comprising a body portion designed to represent a tank and including spaced side members of similar outline, in- V wardly directed flanges projecting from the respective side members, curved end memthe toy and engaging the said flanges, the seat and bed defining a compartment by the adjacent end of one of the curved end memintervening space therebetWeen, a hinged here being connected with said Wall, a gun door forming part of one of said'side mem- 10 projected through said Wall and reposing hers, means for propelling said toy and 5 upon said adjacent curved member, a seat means for steering the latter.
supported by said bed and connected with In testimony whereof I affix 1n signature. the other of said curved end members, said MAE R. WI LIAMS.
