Patented Apr. 5, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EXPLOSIVE CAP.
Application filed October 18, 1924, Serial No. 744,423, andin Germany April 24, 1924.
In explosive caps into the clearance spaces of which retarding tablets or retarding bodies are forced, there arises the possibility, in fuze bodies, the central bores of which take the retarding means, are forced into the clearance spaces of the explosive caps, that premature ignitions may occur, owing to inadvertence in handling the caps.
The present invention removes this danger by manufacturing the explosive caps with retardation means consisting of a single metal tube or other suitable. device in such a way that the bores in the various parts of the tube correspond in size to the individual charges. The retarding body is first forced into the smaller bore of the sleeve, then the initial priming or detonating composition is applied, and then upon the latter, the secondary charge. The charge of the explosive cap and the initial priming or detonating composition may however be applied first, after which the retarding body is forced into the smallest bore. In order to protect these explosive caps against the penetration of moisture, the bottom surface may be protected by means of a coating of lacquer, or by affixing a small impermeable plate or cover of paper, celluloid or the like.
In the drawing a. preferred form of the invention is illustrated by way of example in elevation and section.
The metal sleeve a contains the retarding body I), the initial priming or detonating composition 0 and thesecondary charge cl.
These explosive caps serve, in combination W than electrical instantaneous fuze, as electrical time fuzes for technical blasting purposes. The regular expansion longitudinally of the bores causes the regular distance of the shots. A special advantage of the new cap consists in the feature that on account of the effective enclosing of the initial priming or detonating composition it is possible to effect substantial economies in the latter. Further this arrangement is lucrative because the intial priming or de-. tonating composition is protected against rubbing and knocks.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare what I claim is:
An explosive cap consisting of a single metal tube provided with a narrow bore for receiving a retarding body, an intermediate conical bore for receiving the initial priming composition and a wide cylindrical bore for receiving the secondary charge, the dimensions of said bores being adapted to the quantities of the charges contained Within the cap.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
