SPINNING DEVICE.

rlhis invention relates to spinning devices, such for example as tops, and particularly to devices of this class of the musical type, employing means for producing sound when the device is in operation; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the class-described employing a co1nparatively wide base or support adapted to be placed on a. table, floor or other surface and in connection with which the rotatable or spinning part of the device is coupled and operates; a further object being to provide a spinning body rotatable on said base or a spindle carried thereby, and inclndingvsound producing means, part of which is operated by the spinning' body, and the other part of which Vis supported on and held stationary by said spindle; a further object being to provide a spinning body in the general form of a top, .the upper end portion of said body .or the cover therefor being provided with `apertures through which the sound may be passed; a still further object being to provide means cooperating with the spinning body for spinning or operating the saine; and with these and other objects in view, `the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose. speci-fied which is simple in construction and operation, ef- :cient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the. views, and in which z- Fig. 1 is a transverse, sectional vie-w through a spinning device made according to `my invention; and,
Fig. 2 is a partial section on the line 2 -2 .of Fig. 1.
In practice, I provide a base or support 5 .preferably yin the form of an inverted cupshaped body having outwardly and downwardly flared walls, and to the top of the base is lsecured aspindle 6 which projects thereabove. The inner face 7 of a ball bearing 8 of any conventional form is `clamped between nuts 9 and 10 on the spindle 6 which is threaded to receive the nut-s 9 and 10. Mounted in connection with the outer race or casing of the bearing 8 is the body 11 of the spinning device, said body being cup-shaped in form and having an outwardly and upwardly flared wallterininating in a straight annular portion 12 .to receive a corresponding straight portion 13 on the cover part 14 for .thepbody 11, said cover part being secured in position by screws 15 or in any other manner.
Mounted within the body 11 and encircling the bearing` 8 is a comparatively heavy ring 16, which may be composed of wood or metal, and into which the screws 17 for retaining` the bearing 8 in place, are passed, said screws also passing through the body 1l.. Secured .to the top of the ring 1-6 is a disk 18 preferably composed of fibrous inaterial, and on which a movable sound producing body 19 isl placed, said body pref* erably having `many flat surfaces about its periphery for the reason hereinafter stated.
Mounted upon the spindle 6 within the body 11 is a bell 26 of common forni, and such as is employed in house bells, bicycle bells and similar sounding devices, and the bell 2G is so mounted that the lower edge thereof is in spaced relation with reference vto the fibre disk 18 and also arranged to contain the sound producing device ,19 within the bell as clearly seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The cap or cover 14 is provided with spaced apertures 2l which may be of any shape or form, and ,arranged in any desired mann-er, and through which the sound from the bell or gong 26 `is adapted lto lpass out through the spinning device as will be apparent. Centrally ofthe top of the cap or cover 14 is secured an upwardly yprojecting stub shaft 22 upon which is adapted to be mounted the usual spring-wound spinner 23 commonly employed in tops `well known upontlre market. The devices v.of this spinner engage the usual apertures 24 `provided in the top flat face of the cap or cover 14 and encircling the stub shaft 22.
F rom the foregoing, it will be apparent that the body 11, together with the cap 0r cover 14 and the ` aarts 16 and 18 are rotatable on the spin le 6, while the bell 26 is held stationary on said spindle, whereby when the spinning device is rotated by winding .the spinner in the usual manner and releasing `the same by downward pressure upon the protruding` end ofthe stub shaft 22 and upward pull on kthe spinner 23, the body 11, cap .111 and connecting parts Will rotate on the spindle 6 or the ball bearing 8,
provided. In this operation, the sound producing device 19, by virtue ot' its many fiat surfaces, weight and trictional engagement with the fibrous disk 18, will be thrown vigorously and by centrifugal force against the bell 26 to repeatedly sound this bell throughout the-entire period oi rotat-ion or spinning ot the device. By providing the base or support 5, on which the device spins, eliminate the present objection to spinning devices or tops, in that destruction to a. floor, table or other surface is obviated, and no destruction can be caused in the operation ot the device, and further, the sound producing qualities of the device are highly increased.
It will be understood that while l have shown a top body ot speciiic torm as well as a bell ot' one form and construction, it will be apparent that l am not necessarily limited to the shapes or forms ot said parts, herein shown and described, nor am I necessarily limited to the speciiic manner of coupling the several parts of the device herein set out, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from th-e spirit of my invention or sacriiicing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention,
vwhat- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.. A spinning device comprising a base, al body rotatably mounted on said base, sound producing means supported on said base within said body, and a member supported on said body within said sound producing means, which in the rotation of said body will be moved into engagement with said sound producing means to actuate the same.
2. Aspinning device comprising a base, a bodyl rotatably mounted on said base, sound producing means supported on said base within said body, a member supported on said body within said sound producing means, which in the rotation of said body will be moved into engagementwith said sound producing means to actuate the same, and means for rotating said body.
3. A spinning device comprising a base, a` body rotatably mounted on said base, sound producing means supported on said base within said body, a. member supported on said body within said sound producing means, which in the rotation of said body will be moved .into engagement with said sound producing means to actuate the same, means 'for rotating said body, and aball bearing on which said body rotates.
el; A spinning device comprising a spindle, a Vbody rotatably mountedv on said spindle, sound producing` means within said body and fixed to said spindle and held stationary in the rotation ot said body, and a member freely movable within said body and within the boundaries of said sound producing means and moved into engagen'ient therewith by the rotation of said body.
5. A spinning` device con'iprising a spindle, a body rotatably mounted on said spindle, sound producing means within said body and fixed to said spindle and held stationary in the rotation oiE said body, a member i'reely movable within said body and within the boundaries ot' said sound producing means and moved into engagement therewith by the rotation ot said body, and said rotatable bot y having apertures through which the sound adapted to pass.
G. A spinning device comprising a spindle, a bodyy rotatably mounted on said spindle, sound producing means within said body and fixed to said spindle and held stationary in the rotation of said body, a member freely movable within said body and withinV the boundaries ot' said sound producing means and moved into engagement therewith by the rotation of said body, said rotatable body having apertures through which the sound is adapted to pass, and means whereby said body may be rotated.
7. A spinning device comprising a spindle, a body rotatably mounted on said spindle, sound producing means within said body and iixed to said spindle and held stationary in the rotation of said body, a member freely movable within said body and within the boundaries of said sound producing means and moved into engagement therewith by the rotation of said body, said rotatable body having apertures through which the sound is adapted to pass, means whereby said body may be rotated, and said spindle projecting through said 'body and a comparatively wide base secured thereto.
8. A spinning device comprising a spindle, a body rotatably mounted on said spindle, sound producing means within said body and iixed to said spindle and held stationary in the rotation ot said body, a member freely movable within said body and within the boundaries oil said sound producing means and moved into engagement therewith by the rotation ot said body, said rotatable body having apertures through which the sound is adapted to pass, means whereby said body may be rotated, said spindle projecting through said body and a. comparatively wide base secured thereto, and a ball bearing between the spindle and body and on which said body rotates.
9. A spinning device of the class described comprising a base, a spindle projecting upwardly through the central portion ot the base, a body rotatably mounted on said spindle, said body being composed ot separate parts, one of which constitutes a cap or cover, a bell iixedly secured to the spindle and positioned within said body, a iiat suriace in said body in juxtaposition to and in spaced relation with said bell, and a lreely movable member disposed between said l'lat surface and within the boundaries of said bell whereby, in the rotation of said body, said member is intermittently moved into engagement with said bell.

A spinning device of the class described comprising a base, a spindle projectn ing upwardly through the central portion of the base, a body rotatably mounted on said spindle, said body being composed of separate parts, one of which constitutes a cap or cover, a bell iiXedly secured to the spindle and positioned within said body, a flat suriace in said body in juxtaposition to and in spaced relation with said bell, a i'reely movable member disposed between said flat surface and within the boundaries of said bell whereby in the rotation of said body, said member is intermittently moved into engagement with said bell, and the cap ot said body being apertured.

A spinning device of the class described comprising a base, a spindle projecting upwardly through the central portion of the base, a body rotatably mounted on said spindle, said body being composed ot' separate parts, one of which constitutes a cap or cover, a bell iixedly secured to the spindle and positioned within said body, a flat surface in said body in juxtaposition to and in spaced relation withsaid bell, a freely movable member disposed between said iiat suriace and within the boundaries of said bell whereby in the rotation of said body, said member is intermittently moved into engagement with said bell, the cap of said body being apertured, means on said body whereby the usual spinner may be coupled therewith 'for spinningl said body on the spindle, and a ball bearing on said spindle on which said body rotates.
