This invention relates to certain improvements in filler caps and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character embodying novel and improved means whereby .the liability ot' losing such cap is substantlally eliminated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device ot this general character which' has associated therewith yieldable or resilient means for effectively maintaining the same in applied or working position yet readily permits sufficient displacement of the cap proper to provide access within a tank or other holder with which it may be employed.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar rangement of the several parts of my improved filler cap whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be deiinitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac companying drawings, wherein z- Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a cap and the parts concomitant thereto constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through my improved device in applied position.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a tubular member having one end portion inserted through the wall 2 of a gas holder or tank, said member being welded, brazed, soldered, threaded or otherwise held in applied or assembled relation.
The inner or inserted end portion of the member l is provided at diametrically opposed points with the elongated depending arms 3, each of said arms being relatively broad and arcuate in cross section. Y
The outer or free end portion of each of the arms 3 is provided with a pair of spaced open slots 4, the material therebetween providing a tongue 5 disposed inwardly on a predetermined curvature.
Hookeud or otherwise attached, as at 6, to the inner or free end portions of the tongues 5, are the extremities of the coil springs 7 which extend upwardly in convergence through the member 1 and are hooked or otherwise connected, as at 8, to the aXial center ot' the inner face of t-he cap 9, said cap being of. a slip type and adapted to snugly fit or engage over the outer end'portion of the member 1.
The springs 7 operate to exert a constant pull upon the cap 9 whereby said cap, when in closed position upon the member 1, is effectively held against displacement. When it is desired to lill a tank or holder or otherwise have access therein, the springs 7 will readily yield suiiiciently to permit the cap 9 to be lifted oi of the upper end portion ol the member 1 and swung to one. side thereof. lWhile the cap 9 will not be completely removed t'rom the member 1 yet its displacement will be sufficient to permit liquid or the like to be passed through the member l.
My improved device, as herein disclosed, is particularly adapted for use in connection with gasoline tanks or holders used in connection with engines of an internal cumbustion. type and more specially when employed in connection with a motor vehicle.
From the foregoing description it is thought. to be obvious that a filler cap constructed in accordance with my invention is part-icularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, andit will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation ot the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A device of the class described compris` ing, in combination, a tubular member adapted to be inserted through and supported by a wall of a container, the inserted end of the member being open at all times and provided at diametrically opposed points with elongated arms, a slip cap adapted to be engaged over the outer end of the tubular member, the outer end portions of the arms being provided with inwardly disposed tongues, and retractible members connected to said tongues and to substantially the axial center of the cap.

A device of the class described, comprsing, in combination, a tubular member adapted to be inserted through and supported by a Wall of a container, the inserted end of the member being open at all times and provided at diametrioally opposed points With elongated arms, a slip cap adapted to be engaged over the outer end of the tubular member, the outer end portions of the arms being provided With inwardly disposed tongues, and retractible members connected to said tongues and to substantially the axial center of the cap, said retractible members converging toward their connection With the cap When the cap is in closed position.
