  • This invention relates to certain improvements in hand grasps and has relation more particularly to a device of .this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with bails such as are employed in conjunction with preserving kettles, pails, water buckets, and kindred utensils, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which can be applied to bail without the necessity of removing the bail from the vessel or o'ther article to which it may be applied.

Be it known that I, ELsIE WILLETT, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residingat Alberton, in the county. of Mineral and State of lVlontana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Grasps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in hand grasps and has relation more particularly to a device of .this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with bails such as are employed in conjunction with preserving kettles, pails, water buckets, and kindred utensils, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which can be applied to bail without the necessity of removing the bail from the vessel or o'ther article to which it may be applied.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying an elongated member havinga bore therethrough with an entrance slot in communication with saic bore, together with a plug 'adapted'to close said slot after the hand grasp has beenapplied to a bail and wherein means areprovided for holding said applied plug against displacement. The invention consists in the details of constructionand in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hand grasp whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and other wise more convenient and advantageous for use, as willbe hereinafter more fully set forth. The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I wlll now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac-- companying drawings, wherein? Figure 1 is a'longitudinal sectional view taken through a handgrasp constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position, the coacting bail or kindred member being shown in fragment and in elevation.

As disclosed in Figs. 1 to 5 of the accompanying drawings, my improved hand grasp comprises an elongated body B of desired configuration and which has extending ion gitudinally therethrough at substantially its axial center a bore 1 with which commu- I nicates a slotQ extending theentire length of the body B and open at its opposite endwith the side walls of said slot converging toward the center of the bodyB, with the space between the inner longitudinal mar-r gins of the slot 2 of a width su'fiicient to readily permit the passage'through the slot 2 into the bore 1 of a bail 3 or kindred member. i a
After the body B has been applied to the bail 3 or the like, a plug 4 is snugly fitted within the slot '2, said plug being of' a length coextensive with the length of the body B with the outer face of the plug substantially in continuity with the peripheral face of the (body B.
The body Band the applied plug at are provided adjacent their opposite ends with the clrcumferentially disposed grooves 01? channels 5 in each of which snugly engages an inwardly disposed bead or-c'orrugation 6 extending around the free marginal portion of the flange .7 of a cap C. A cap C snugly engages an end portion of the body and is adapted to have rotary movement therearound and each ofsaid caps C is provided with a cut-away portion 8 adaptedto regis ter and substantially co ncide w th an end of the slotQ, and the inner part of the cut away portion 8 terminates in a parti-circular opening 9 in which the bail 3 or the like is adapted to seat when the hand grasp is applied thereto. In the present embodiment of my invention and particularly as illustrated in Fig. 5, the opening 9 is in the form of a semi-circle and said opening 9 is defined by an inwardly disposed flange 10 adapted to extend within the adjacent end portion of the bore 1 of the body B.
Before the body B is applied to the bail 3 or the like, the plug 4 is separated and the caps C are adjusted to have the cutaway portions '8 thereof in register with the ends of the slot 2 in said body B. After the body B has been applied to the bail 3 or the like, the plug 4 is applied and the said plate is provided with an angular ex tension 11 which overlies the periphery of the body B and is suitably secured thereto.
The inner end portion of the plate P is 7 provided with the inwardly disposed extension 12 which snugly engages within the adjacent end portion of the bore 1 ofthe body B and which extension is continued to provide anelongated spring member 14 which has contact with the portion of the bail 3 or the like within the bore 1 ofthe applied hand grasp.
. Thevsprings 14: serve as anti-rattlers and also provide means to facilitate the removal of the hand grasp when desired as upon returning the cap C to bring the portions 8' thereof into register with the ends of the slot 2, the sprin s 14 will cause a relative movement of the body B and bail 3, whereby the plate P will be partially extended out oftheslot2.
It is to be understood, however, that it is primarily intended that when my improved hand grasp is applied to a bail, such mounting is-to be considered substantially permanent.
In the form of my invention particularly illustrated in Fig. 6, the slot 2 of the body B is dovetailed with the plug 4 of a corresponding configuration in cross section, and the plug 4 is applied by endwise movement through an end of the slot 2.
From the foregoing, description it is thought to be obvious that a hand grasp constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with 7 which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my'invention is susceptible of some change ,and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
'1. As ,a new 7 article of manufacture, a hand grasp comprising an elongated tubular body having a longitudinally disposed slot in communication with the bore thereof, a plug snugly fitting within the slot, caps rotatably supported by the end portions of the body, each of said'caps being provided witha cut-away portion adapted to register .and substantially coincide with adjacent ends of the bore and slot of the body when the cap is in one position, and a plate carried by each end portion of the body and snugly fitting within the cut-away portions of the caps when said caps are in a second pos1t1on to hold the caps against rotation.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a hand grasp comprising an elongated tubular body having a longitudinally disposed slot in communication with the bore thereof, a plug snugly fitting within the bore, caps rotatably supported by the end portions of the body, each of said caps being provided with a cut-away portion adapted to register and substantially coincide with adjacent ends of the bore and slot of the body when the cap is in one position, and a plate carried by each end portion of the body and snugly fitting within the cut-away portions said bailbeing insertible within the bore, of the body through the slot thereof, a'plug' for closing said slot, and caps engaged with the opposite end ortions of the tubular body for holding t e plug in applied'position, each of said caps-being provided with a resilient arm extendingwithin the bore of the body for contact with the bail.
