BATTERY FILLER.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedduly I8, 1922.
Application led September 8, 1919. Serial No. 322,255.
T o all whom t may cof/werft:
Be it known that I, ARvEL A. Bos'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Martinsville, in the county of Wetzel and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Battery Fillers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices primarily intended for filling storage batteries, and has for an object the provision of a device which may be secured to a bottle, or other container by meansof which distilled water may be poured into the battery cells without coming in contact with metal, or other injurious substances. f
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which will normally maintain the bottle in closed condition for the protection of its contents, but which will be automatically opened when used-for filling the battery.
A further objectl is the provision of agdevice` of this character, which is simple in construction and operation and which may be readily connected to bottles or containers of Various kinds.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is rea-d in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: s
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention applied to a bottle and shown in closed position.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the device in position for use.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device per se.
Figure-'4 is a Figure 1. y
Referring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The device may be constructed of any suitable material and comprises Aa tubular member 10, one end of which is threaded, as shown at 11, for engagement with a suitable stopper 12, the iaatter being designed to be placed within the mouth of aV bottle 13. The member 10fis surrounded b an' annular flange 14, for the purpose of orming a stop,'which is `adapted'to engage the stopper 12 to limit its insertion withln the said stopper. l
Slidably mounted upon the tubular member 10, is a sleeve 15, and positioned between section on the line 4 4 oi this sleeve and the flange 14 and surround- 1ng the member 10, is a coiled spring 16, the purpose of which is to force the sleeve 1n a direction away from the bottle.
The inner end of the tubular member 10 is formed with a curved seat 17, for the vreception of a preferably semi-spherical with openings 24, Vwhich are spaced iroml the outer end of the said member.
In the use of the invention,l the bottle, which may contain distilled water, has the invention secured thereto. By inverting the bottle, the outer end of the tubular member 10 may be inserted within the filling opening of the battery cell, so that the outer end of the stem 19 will contact with the plates, suliic'ient pressure being exerted to press the stem slightly inward. This unseats the valve 18 and permits the water to pass outward through the openings 24 into the battery cell.- lThis prevents the water from coming in contact with any metallic or injurious substances, and yfurther prevents spilling water over the top of the battery. When sufficient water has been placed Within the cell,.the device may be removed from the battery, whereupon the spring will immediately cause the valve to be seated, so as to prevent` further discharge of the contents vof the bottle.
By locating the openings 24 from the end of tubular4 member 10, a semi-automatic action can beobtained by filling the battery to exactly the proper height.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changesas properly` fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
In combination with a container having beyond the outer end of said casing, a transversely disposed pin secured through the stem adjacent its outer end and adapted to reciprocate Within oppositely disposed longitudinal slots formed in the outer end of the casing, a sleeve surrounding the casing and normally positioned over the escape ports, said sleeve being provided with grooves disposed upon diametrically opposite sides ofits interior, and is adapted to receive the ends of the pin, and a coil spring engaging the sleeve and the annular flange for the purpose speciied.
ln testimony whereof I aix my signature.
