Application filed February 14, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES IV. VINCENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashley, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Funnels of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel form of funnel mainly designed for filling radiators of automobiles and the like, the principal object of the invention being to provide a funnel whereby water can be poured into the radiator without spilling the same over the radiator and without wasting any through the overflow pipe of the radiator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a collar on the funnel for engaging the filling spout oi the radiator to hold the funnel in upright position and also to make the funnel usable on different sizes of radiators.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation of the tunnel constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of the small end of the funnel.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view showing how the funnel is used.
Fig. 5 is a section through the filling spout of the radiator and the cylindrical part of the tunnel showing how the channel receives the over-flow pipe.
In these views 1 indicates the main part of the tunnel and 2 indicates the spout part which is of cylindrical form with a portion of the wall bent inwardly to provide an exterior channel 3 which extends longitudinally of the spout 2. The upper end of this channel is closed.
A collar 4 is placed around the upper end of the part 2 at its junction with the main part of the body, this collar being of cap shape and having a flange 5 at its bottom. T his collar is adapted to engage the upper end of the filling spout 6 of the radiator A,

the channel 3 receiving the upper end of the overflow pipe 7 of the radiator.
It will thus be seen that water or the like can be poured into the radiator without danger of spilling the same and without wasting any through the overflow pipe of the radiator. The collar acts to support the funnel in upright position even though the cylindrical part 2 may be of smaller diameter than the interior of the filling spout oi the radiator. Thus the collar permits the device to be used with different sizes of radiators. I
If desired I may make the collar detachable from the device and if this is done the collar is provided with an inwardly extending ear 8 for engaging the channel, this ear acting to help hold the collar in position on the part 2.
My improved funnel will automatically balance itseli in an upright position on the radiator filling spout by the walls of channel 3 fitting around the overflow pipe in the radiator. By my arrangement of parts a person can rest one edge of a pail or water upon the funnel so that he can pour in the water rapidly and with but little effort. The flanged cap will also prevent the water, when the radiator is filled too full, from running over the top of the radiator as the surplus water will pass through the overflow pipe in the radiator.
The spout of my funnel is made short enough so as to not project below the filling spout of the radiator. Thus there is nothing to obstruct the passage of'water from the funnel into the radiator as is the case where the funnel is provided with a long spout which engages the deflector plate in the radiator.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
